you dont "need" one although they are recommended. Are you using asio4all? I just use stock soundcard with that and get on ok but if you wanna plug mics and suff in then Im sure someone here can recommend you one.

i'd recommend getting a decent one, not too expensive (around 2-300) if you plan to stick at the music. that way you wont have to worry about it in the future.
i have a lexicon - Ionix u42s meself, love it.

wahey the sapphire will do you proud
if you can afford around £350 for monitors i'd recommend going for some KRK RP8 G2's. If you're especially looking to make dance/bass heavy music they've go down to an impressive 45Hz...not the lowest response out there but for the cash you cant really go wrong! I spent a fair amount of time testing budget monitors at my local store before investing, and the KRK's came up trumps!
£350 may seem alot at an early stage, and if it is then maybe look at the smaller KRK RP6/5...they'll be a tad cheaper but for price you'll be sacrificing frequency response, and have to make do with a smaller woofer to boot.
Hope this helps

I am about to purchase the following:
Soundcard - Focusrite Saffire Pro 6
Monitors - Either Yamaha HS50M's or KRK GP5's. (I am on a tight budget too)
IMO (and alot of others) the yamaha HS series are the most flat frequency and 'True' sounding monitors you can get in their price range and above in alot of cases. If you want to know exactly how you mix actually sounds and how it will translate on other systems, then the Yamaha's will be the ones to do that, If I can I will be getting a pair for sure.
In regards to The KRK's I just seem to notice alot of people use them, so I presume they must be very good, and failing getting the Yamahas I will get a pair of these.

Definately...they're worth a look. The yamaha's are very accurate and their sound is incredibly flat. But they do lack the bass found in the KRK's. The Yamaha's drop out at 55Hz as opposed to the KRK's 43Hz. Recently saw the CM Masterclass with Reso...he's rocking a pair of RP8's

Yeah the bass is better thats for sure. I would pay out for the HS80M's but they do cost a fair bit from what I can afford right now. I just don't want to get monitors that add any colour to the sound, cause lets face it the whole point of having monitors is to hear the ACTUAL sound. So The more flat response the better. And when it comes to bass I don't need to hear it that well tbf, we all know it kicks the shit out of 20 - 80hz range (best punch at 40hz). Thats where we all have our subasses generally.

These get good reviews, go for around £250 now too for a pair, and in 2002 (when that article was written) they were £400 a pair.

I wouldn't choose my monitors over a difference of 12Hz in such a low freq range. Anything under 80 Hz is well low imo.

ive just bought some hs80's today, went into digital village to have a listen and prefered them to the krk rokit 6"s, the 6" and probably more with the 8" have more bass, but i dunno the yamahas sounded crispier, and the kicks seemed to stand out more that on the krk's, i definately liked the sound better, but i had to think about it cos they gone up in price since like yesterday! they were 350 for a pair before christmas, and i have just shelled out 430 for them
cant afford an interface for now because of it
