from what i understand there was allegations of election fraud, which has severely weakened the legimacy of Mubarak and his government, which has essentially been in power for the last 30 years. this is also amongst general calls for reform of social policy. The egyptian police have been criticised internationally for the extremely rough handling of protests over the last couple of days, and tensions are developing into full scale riots.

some incredible live updates here
http://www.guardian.co.uk/news/blog/201 ... ve-updates
sounds like chaos at the moment although in some areas apparently protesters are pushing police back
unless this ends quickly either way it could get very very messy soon :/

thanks for the live link, looks like the protesters are actually gaining some ground despite the tragic loss of life, and it even seems police are retreating and 'giving up' in a lot of places.

a (probably pointless) curfew has been announced in Alexandria, Suez & Cairo and people are even chanting for the army to help them against the police. this is going to be an interesting weekend

My thoughts are with the Egyptian people. I hadn't read about them unplugging the internet, that's a very totalitarian move on their part.

the flaws in globablisation are manifesting themselves now, i wouldnt be suprised to see a popular uprising in india soon.
