So does anyone know if dubstep works with real instruments? Are there any tracks that have been recorded with real instruments? I suppose old dub was real instruments but I'm yet to find a modern day dubstep track that uses real instruments.

With this in mind I thought I'd have a crack at it - an experiment as it were. So, I took Stenchman's Licking The Envelope, worked at it and came out with this:

I genuinely think there's potential for dubstep to be played live with real instruments (I know Rusko famously uses a bass guitar sometimes). It could be a real market niche for a band to play 140 bpm music with dubstep's characteristics I think.

But does anyone know of any dubstep tracks that use real instruments almost solely?

Nah. You could do it though, why not? The less sampling and synths though the less it is going to sound like dubstep and more like a band at 140bpm imo.

I suppose dubstep's main thing is bass sounds right, but If you look at the like's of Death From Above, Chris Wolstenhome from Muse, and Flea, they can get some beastly and original sounds from a bass guitar. I reckon it could work.

Personally I like the mix of James Blake and Mount Kimbie.

It sounds cool with both elements.

three fast laptops, three interfaces, and three people with daws and midi controllers would be a live performance. thats a lot of money though...

I suppose this isn't really with real instruments, but it's pretty interesting to say the least. I always figured one could get some pretty cool sounds by mixing Reaktor with a bass guitar!

i always record drum hits and percussion for samples and stuff. never tried bass guitars tho, probly should give it a shot add some modulation?

Is it possible to get proper sub bass power from a bass guitar? I figured that most amps / cabinets for rock music tend to roll off the sub in favour of bringing out more of the second harmonic but maybe thats how they're mixed or setup.
i.e. When Pendulum play live they have a bass player but I'm pretty certain they have a programmed pure sub line underneath when playing live.
