Are skrillex's basses reese, im not too sure. Relative to massive synth. Ive seen some tutorials where they use modern talking oscillations, and some claiming its a reese bass. Also i dont quite understand what it means to de-tune by X amount of cents. How should i go about doing this in massive.

Please use some laymen terms im very new at production.

its mostly a very processed resse with extreme growl. Try techniques for noisia basses and you'll get some results

He uses the fm8 for his growls

FM8 is a Frequency Modulation synth by Native Instruments, it's pretty sick but has a steep learning curve.

His basses aren't all reeces, try different combos of square and saw waves. They key is the processing afterwards. You'll need multiple distortions and filters. You're trying to bring out the resonances in the sound, so expect a lloooong effects chain.

Really? I found it the easiest one to pick up.. I'm an FM head though.

Hmm... I've messed around with FM8 a bit but haven't got even close to Skrillex's sounds

Very processed is an understatement. Pretty sure that like Excision he's bandsplitting & layering out the wazoo...

Soo... not sure where all of you are getting your info from... how do you know he's using FM8?
Here is something thats incredibly close that I came across yesterday while making patches...
This is Massive, no freq splitting... a few camelphat's, resonators, short delays, short reverbs... and so on.
I realize this isn't 100% his sound, but its so very very close. Not bothered enough to take it any farther.

Honestly, no one really knows because he hasn't commented on them at all. All he has said is that he uses ableton and a few plugins, although a bunch of forums are saying that he does use NI's FM8 for the growls (aggro preset supposedly sounds mean). Noisia definitely has similar sounds, so it definitely makes you think that it is a reese but who knows. Just gotta experiment with numerous synths and distortions

Every sound he made in scary monsters and nice sprites was made in the fm8. He said that himself. Sure the song was called fm8 before he renamed it to scary monsters and nice sprites. This isnt to say he didnt re-sample every sound, but the fm8 pumps out some gnarly sounds as it is...

The bass is an illusion, he uses anti-eq to add low end harmonics to the highend synth line thus creating an almost exact low end replica of the lead even tho sometimes its completly diffrent. He is a pioneer thats why people like his music.
