i've been trying for a long time to get that chorusy/filth sound Joker uses in almost every tune he produces, that grimy full (bitcrushed?) sound you hear in tunes like purple city and city hopper. it'd be so sick if someone could tell me how to make it in Reason.

Just go mental with the filters/routing/fx in Thor.

It's just slightly detuned saws with LOTS of automation, maybe a bit of chorus etc. Nothing too fancy, he just plays *really* well. Probably be better off learning how to play the keyboard better than fiddling with thor for hours.

Really? I don't think there's anything special in what is being played. You can make that sound pretty quickly in Thor by layering saws like you say, and get that same sort of movement with detuning/chorus/filters etc.

Not exactly a joker fan though so my idea of what he sounds like might be way off.

Are you kidding? His song construction is amazingly intricate. The way all the different elements play off each other musically and gives his tunes a feeling of being 'composed' rather than just some dude making dubstep in the piano roll like a lot of his peers. Joker is one of the best melody writers in dubstep IMO.

Oh, also, to the OP, lot's of little bits of vibrato here and there.

yes, vibrato with a medium rate and low depth so it doesnt sound like a siren. Detuning and layering saws and square waves. Chorus and Flangers can help. Square wave bass for the midrange. Pure sine subs. Simple but delicious drums. listen to Dr Dre's The Chronic and then strip the vocals and samples and do your own version of it like you just came back from time traveling 300 years in the future.

yea all about saws and brass patches are a good start
more about playing than the sounds when it comes down to it
he loves some of those old analog presets from classic synths

my lil take on the sound

honestly all the lines in it besides the drums and bass i played live and left unquantized while playing on a metronome, but did some in multiple takes and copy pasted best bits from the best of different takes
pitchbends and all
it's half of what gives it the feel and i'm guessing joker/starkey etc a lot of that type of stuff does the same

not so much the exact sounds but the feel of the tunes is what makes em imo like say kuedo - starfox which is one of my faves
basic waveforms and subtractive synthesis sounds with very lil processing but so much swing/swagger and vibes to it
