I've read around that remixes are the best thing to help you learn. I've downloaded a pack Shad and Dallas green - live forever. And it's just given me all the instruments in a WAV format...I want the melodies to all these so I can incorporate my own sound but I have no idea how to just know what all the notes that were used are...Is there a program or something I can put the wav into and it can break it down into notes used?

at that point youre gonna need a little bit of musical knowledge, knowing how to play something as simple as the piano will give great results to a problem like this gl!

Well I know a little bit about the piano, but not enough to be like OH THAT'S AN F# for sure...and so on. There has to be an easier way?

im not an experienced professional in the field, but i do have years of musical knowledge practically around all areas which helps and fuels my interest in making this music lol, but to me it seems simple but if not to you, my suggestion is start simple learn a simple scale whether it be treble or bass and start from there. then you will be able to recognize notes, im sure there are many sites on google maybe even dsf that can help you with this

You eventually get an ear for it by just making music, knowing basic scales should help you fill in the blanks. Just stick a nice note underneath and see if it sounds right, it will probably be the note or a fifth ime. This is really what you should do, honestly. But if there are complex chords and stuff it becomes an absolute nightmare. In which case you can use this program : http://www.sonicvisualiser.org/ . Its good for seeing if fm/granular/repitched sounds are out of tune too. Nothing more frustrating than having a sound that is always halfway between semitones.

It might take some time to figure out what each instrument is doing but it is a good thing to practice. It really requires no musical knowledge at all. Some songs are harder than others. Try starting with the bassline, see if you can figure out what it's playing.

Well the way i'm thinking of it...it really shouldn't be that difficult because you only have 12 notes it could be...then just change it to whatever octave is closest. A lot of people use chords though and I have no idea how you find the root note to build the sound of the chord. I guess it is all ear training like you guys say.

try singing the note then just clicking notes on the piano roll with just any lead or piano synth until it sounds the same note, you might have to keep listening back to the original note to get the pitch but yeah, singing to yourself really helps

i think being able to recognize notes in a sequence is always musical knowledge... not music theory knowledge but i mean comon. who needs musical theory when we have auto chord piano roll

this, i dunno anythinf really about notes n chords, just mess about till it sounds right

Now my pitch perception isn't the best but if I'm listening to a song and my guitar in hand then I'll have a rough idea of note/octave and then it's all down to trial and error. The more you practice that process of what is the note/interval being played the better you get at it, either that or resort to Melodyne's DNA.

The bottom line is if you have a good ear for what sounds right, that will carry you far.

Music theory is a useful thing which I recommend you learn (think of it this way: it is hundreds of years of people with good ears telling you the sort of note combinations that generally sound good and which ones generally sound bad. You don't need music theory to write good tunes, but it will speed up the process of trial and elimination that I hear (and see) in a lot of musicians who don't understand it and don't want to understand it.

This + spectrum analyzer is an idea. The fastest way, though, is to fiddle around on your keyboard. You'd be surprised how fast you can pick up a melody just by hitting the keys until it sounds right.

Figuring out the notes used in a melody tends to be a case of trial for me, just sit with my guitar for a minute or so and I can usually figure out simple melodies although it definitely takes a bit of practice. Chords are trickier, the way I've learned is to associate different chords and scales to the overall sound, major chords will sound happy, minor chords will sound sad etc. I've always associated major 7th with the piano music from the original Sims games for example, so as soon as you've found the root note and have an idea of how the chord is phrased you should be pretty close. Not sure if I've explained this as best as I could, but you get the idea

Tip for anyone using FL
In edison load up a sample, then under tools hit dump score in piano roll ( or similar) and it will have mapped the sample out in the piano roll.

I did this with a few different samples with varied success but it was easy enough to work out from that point anyway though.

i wouldnt even imagine doing that with an analyzer...

darn... just pick up any tuned keyboard and fiddle around... it will work. if it doesnt... then i dunno what will...

oh and it may not work for one tune but by the end of o'11... ull get better at melody writing

or if you wanted to go overboard get something like melodyne or waves tune and stick that on and let it map things out for you.

look on google for sheet music, or use a tuner plug in, cut the first few notes up and loop them with the tuner on to find out which notes they are, then it's just a matter of eliminating the incorrect notes, to find the next one after all there's only another 11 they could have used, once you've got a few bars down it'll be a piece of piss to get the rest.

given the fact that there are only 12 notes on a keyboard... u may just want to play around and use your ears...

that makes 12 tries and 10 minutes to get used to which ones sound good...

in the long run itll bring u more then anything else compositionwise... seriously.. i hate to spam but.. use your ears...

u want to write good music.. gotta learn to use your ears...

A good way like someone was saying before is to learn basic intervals and assign them to a tune that helps you remember them, for example:

Major 2nd - happy birthday
Major 3rd - the simpsons
perfect 4th - amazing grace

and so on..
