The Differnce Between...

Saying "I don't like this producer/tune" and saying "This producer/tune is shit/untalented/a sell out/disposable/etc."
I feel like a lot of the arguments that go on here stem from some folks failure to distinguish between their personal opinions and facts. While it might be just semantics, it seems like it breeds a lot of unnecessary animosity.

It lies with the readers as much as the posters. If u read someone say, this is shit, it doesn't take much imagination to realize that that is just their opinion and not try to rip them a new one. As with most things in life, it's never a one way street.
All about ignoring the negative and boosting the positive

true (in some cases). still, I don't think it can hurt to encourage people to be a bit more polite

yeah, i agree, but the internet is never going to be completely asshole free. the anonymity and freedom to express opinions or go trolling is too much temptation for some

I think the problem is with the new users to the forums.
If they come to this forum to discuss the music they love and get abuse for liking that type of music, it doesn't exactly encourage them to hang around and discover the dubstep that started it all.
That's what I think. Dubstep is thought of these days as 'robofarts'. Which some of it is, but don't let people forget that it can be mellow AND powerful. Which is what will happen if people get turned away because they are made to feel insuperior for even considering listening to 'brostep'.

thick skin is needed on the internet, like Eleanor Roosevelt said:
“No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.”

Well said.
I've gotta agree with Omega Dub that a lot of the arguments would be cleared up (see more intelligent...) if people would just specify a little better. To flat out disregard a producer/tune/mix as shit is a bit disrespectful in the first place, imo. It would be quite a bit more constructive if they'd just say what they don't like about them/it.
You could consider me a new user too, but I tend to lurk for awhile before posting so that I've got a better feel for the user base.

There is no difference, at all.
It's like complaining when someone says that Mount Everest is a tall mountain. Has anyone ever bitched about that?
'But it's a fact that Mt. Everest is tall! It's the tallest mountain on Earth'
Nope, it's still an opinion. Maybe the person perhaps thinks that there are no tall mountains on Earth?
Point of all of this is. Tall/long/short/high/nice/good/bad/awful are all, in their very essence, subjective and relative terms and should be treated as such. People using these terms, unless they have problems with theory of mind (which not many people do), are well aware of that and are stating their opinions.
You can get your panties in a bunch about someone's opinion and how they phrase it, or you can stop worrying about what other people think and just enjoy the music you enjoy yourself.

You really think so? So you think everyone on this forum would be totally willing to accept that there is no absolute, objective value difference between tunes by Burial, and tunes by Mt. Eden...? That it's all purely subjective, and just a matter of opinion?
I'm not sure we're reading the same forum...

I have a tendency to speak my mind quite clearly: I can be full f praise about music I like and can bash the fuck out of music I don't like. I always give my opinion though and try to never state things as fact.
People are so quick to get on there horses when you say a release sucks because they assume that this automatically implies I think those people suck for listening to that music. Two examples in the Breakage and One Gun Salute topic.
I had no problem when someone called Ramadanman, a musical genius, shit in the DSF awards topic, but when I say I think The Aliens are a joke, many people somehow felt personally offended.

well put. it takes effort for me to not call certain sounds crap even when i know lots of people enjoy them and i can hear significant production skill.
on the other hand you could provide the most gentle criticism for a popular track and youll still get 3 people posting "WHY U HATIN?" (and one of them will actually mean it!)
but yeah i really don't hate any music (i really did think there was good and bad music when i was 19 but after listening to dubstep all these years and seeing people absolutely hate music i love and vice versa, i think i really have finally accepted that idea of everyone's opinion being equally valid.
it really does irk me sometimes though how the only "dubstep" to gain significant attention and popularity near me is consistently uninspired rehashings of older edm styles. I'm not bothered by the fact that 140 bpm tearout neurolectro is super popular. just stop playing it alllllll night at your "dubstep" events.
this could just be misplaced jealousy of all you lucky people out there...i haven't had a good sub experience since nov 2008... dubstep blue balls.
