Shlohmo's beats

Tbh, I'd not heard anything like this guy till I stumbled upon a free download of his a while back. My iPod was on shuffle one day and it came on and I was like :U:

What d'you lot think about his style, I like the way some of his beats are kinda 'deformed'? With no quantization at all. And the kinds of samples etc, those really get me. Kinda like hearing burial for the first time, except rather clean productions if you get me?

If you've not heard of him, here are two of my favourite tunes by him:

Ghosts (part 1)

Ghosts (part 2)

Main reason I've done this, I'm wondering, how would you guys go about making tunes that sounded like this? Not like a guide, but just your thoughts, as producers, about his style etc, and of any other members of the "WeDitItCollective" or FriendsOfFriends output. :t:

Theres a thread about the LA sound somewhere in the forum that will give you a lot of tips. Most of this type of music is about textures and layering. Def unquantasised drums. Field recordings, some sidechaining-but not overdoing it. Using percussion sounds for a lot of your drums, pitching diff percussion sounds up and down, filtering, and creating enough space and the right amount of reverb. A good ear, and a fine taste in music will def help you too! Anyway these are a few quick tips. Theres loads on the internet if you search.

Ive been making sounds in a similar vein i guess for a while...lots of trial and error dude and you will be able to create the sounds your after.

I wasn't looking for tips, just discussion on the subject. It's a pretty straight forward process isn't it? No real tricks in production

Fuck that... just start listening to mad oldies and the like, stop giving 2 what is considered proper in EDM and study how they did things in abby road... spend ridiculous amounts of your time digging and mangling samples, and dont focus on being Schlomo. Be yourself, and just make beats. Thats all FlyLo, Teebs, Schlomo, Samiyam, Gaslamp bleh bleh bleh do... they get bored, mangle samples and dont try to hard.

Record all your drum hits by hand, use really warm samples, if not record your own completely.

The percussive aspects of all this LA beat and mount kimbie/james blake hype are the best part IMHO.

a couple of my friends used to live with him down in oakland. Apparently you should smoke a lot of weed and play a lot of video games too if you wanna get on his level.

I get the whole idea of it peeps, it's not a question of how, just your opinions- maybe I intended this to be an appreciation thread, not specifically for him, but for anything down that alley.
Though I'm slightly concerned that there are so many links about imitating that sound. Isn't the whole point of the style to be yourself and not somebody else?
Probably some sort of marketing scheme from abelton

Apparently all this guy does is sit at home and make beats while smoking weed. Literally all he does.
Seems like course for the future hahaha

JemGroover, exactly what you said, emotional music
