Automation techniques, please help!

Ok so I'm trying to figure this out. Lets say I create a sound within Massive and load it to a midi track in Ableton. I'm a bit confused as to how I automate parameters without things getting absolutely ridiculous. The way I've currently been doing it is just adjusting while playing the track and recording. I also seem to be very confused with Ableton's arrangement view and session view regarding playback, but I guess that's a different problem. So basically I just want to know if I'm doing this the right way, or can you just "draw in" the automation. Also what's the point of making macros inside Massive if you can't really regulate those inside Ableton? Besides of course just recording and twisting that shit about and hoping for the best.

Im not familiar with abelton as im o FL, but im sure abelton has to have a "last tweaked parameter" option or midi learn option, enabling you to automate any parameter even the macros.

You should be able to draw in the automation, I have seen it done on several tut's.
I don't use Ableton myself, but as far as I am aware, you open the automation lane, select the parameter and then 'draw in' the automation just like Logic or Cubase.
Youtube 'dubstep bass Ableton' and it should show you what to do. Alternatively, RTFM?

there are a midi and gey butts at the upper right corner of eib (key is for keyboard aut and so on..(you could automate upper and lower cases differently))...click one of them and you're ready to go - everything which is blue is able( red for key button)
adding automation is a bit tricky.,,you could add a grid point only with the pencil tool in other case you have to make selection between 2 lineas and just drag it down or up...if you dont want it to be gridded just double click (click on the wanted parameter and it will show a red line in the arr)
holdin Shift and movin a breakpoint will clear all the other points on its way...
with plugins just read the text int he plugin box "configure"
other useful thing is teh "+"
and also you could lock the automation line and left the aut on a place when movin the audio clip
in the clip view automation is ez...ypu have fixed controls for midi and audio like pitch bend, transpose, volume etc...
you could select unlink if you want to automate 4 bars lopp with 8 bars automation for example...
thats all i could remember for now,,,

Its really easy actually. I use Ableton and Massive. When your in arrangement view and have Massive open on a track the last paremeter (knob, slider, etc.) you touch in Massive will update as the new automation envelope on the track. It's the quickest way I've found.
