attn: bassnectar, skrillex, and glitch mob fans.

i'm very happy that you're enjoying electronic music. it's a world of possibilities and it needs all the support it can get.

i think you should know, however, that you aren't actually listening to dubstep and you may not even enjoy dubstep. the music the above names play has infinitely more in common with electro house than it does with dubstep.

it's not progression. but, you say, they're incorporating features of other styles into dubstep, of course it's progression! fair play except they're incorporating all the shitty features of classic edm that dubstep was consciously designed to omit. they're making music that is exactly what dubstep was never supposed to be!

so, enjoy you're music, it's great, its just NOT DUBSTEP.

this thread is a great resource for you to find out what IS dubstep

if you love it, great. if you hate it you probably actually like classic edm styles. enjoy!

oh and there's plenty of "chill" or "deep" stuff out there that misses this mark. here's the deal:
dubstep is a word that was coined to describe a thoughtful and conscious form of dance music that sought to escape the foibles of uk garage and dnb. it WAS NOT a word coined to described the hot new rave sound at festivals. So don't use it as such!

Just felt the need to point it out. We can't just put the whole Skrillex etc thing aside without doing the same for the new things Swamp81 put out (as well as other labels I'm sure of it). Although I agree with you these tunes sound way more fresh than the outplayed wobwobs but again, this is all so subjective

i removed a paragraph on swamp 81 and magnetic man from the OP. seemed a little off topic! :W:

and this has nothing to do with quality. its an issue of nomenclature that has gotten worse and worse over the last 2 years.

What a gay thread! Ok mate I'll listen to you cos you clearly know what your talking about... I'm glad I read tis or I'd be so confused with what I'm listening to - all it took was someone clever like you to lead us in the right direction... You are Moses!

Nice one....! What ya gonna do next, bring peace to Israel?!

This place gets gayer everyday I come here!

Does OP realize that Glitch Mob and Bassnectar dont have anytihng to do with electro, and make Glitch Hop?

If you idiots would stop generating the google keywords, shit like Skrillex would stop happening. Figure that out already.

agreed...what's the need of it ??

seems "real and true dubstep fans" want to stay in their corner saying "everyone's dumbass, I am the only one that enjoy undergroud music"...

We don't care about the names, that's it...we enjoy music instead

amen

Seems like OP decided to choose 3 of the bigger US names at the moment and try and earn some internet cool points by shitting on them.

Bassnectar is Downtempo Amorphous music. And imo his shit is way more unique than most dubstep. Try listening to some of his songs before you judge, not just "bass head".
edit: BTW you don't know shit.

oh wow what an eloquent response. if you're trying to humble me you're way off the mark. you're just baiting me to say "resevoir dogs is gay, so there" . good job being the bigger man while I am clearly just targeting artists for ad hominem attacks.

i thought bass nectar actually has his roots in breaks?

in any event, think back to 2007 when electro and dubstep were sort of competing as the word to describe the hot new midrange rave sound. dubstep ended up "winning" but i think electro would have been a better describer.

in any case one must admit that the popular conception of dubstep has gone from "anything bassheavy at 140" to "dancefloor bangers with edgy snyths"

so

you must be joking!   of course people aren't going to like that post; i'm banking on smartasses like you to keep bumping it in the hopes that a few newcommers will see it and get a feel for the fact that dubstep goes far beyond those three.

also, @raggles, i love your user name. and i'll say it a third time: i'm not writing anyone off. i think they're all talented. the nomenclature has gotten out of hand. that is all.

Why are you worried about what other people are listening to? Telling people they're wrong is never an effective way of educating someone on any subject. Much more effective approach is showing them the way without insulting them.

i think you're reading in too much sarcasm or something.

4th time: the subject here is semantical and has nothing to do with quality.

sorry i said "shitty features of classic edm" ... boring drum loops in 2011 are weak imo. sorry. thats the only antagonistic thing up there afaik.

Every time I think about what is and isn't Dubstep, I just remember D&B and all the different shapes it comes in, and realize it doesn't matter.

honestly, thats where my head should be at.

from the start it seemed like it wasn't going to follow the path of dnb and would stay 50/50: innovative / party music. but the term dubstep has become so popular that the decrease in concentration of quality tunes under that title is understandable.

it is what it is now. i just wish it could still be as magical for people as it was for me when i found it. it used to refer to this section of the edm world that felt some gravitas. now dubstep just seems to refer to in your face dance music instead of that complicated knot of bass, feeling, and catharsis that it used to represent.

clearly im way too sentimental. oh well. i just need to come to terms with the way people use this word now.

I could have sworn we were still going by that dubstep is 140ish bpm with heavy subbass. Though Skrillex and bassnectar have more midrange in the tunes than the originals it's not like there's no sub in it, it's just got midrange in it too. If you listen to a set of electro house and then a set of skrillex there will be A LOT more bass in the Skrillex (or whatever bandwagon we're jumping on to hate this week) than the electro house, staggeringly more. I grow so tired of the elitism that comes up so often on these boards. I think i'm just gonna produce tracks from now on that is a pure sine wave at various sub harmonic frequencies (no percussion, that's too midrange) at 140 bpm. Now THAT'S dubstep, not all this bullshit midrange DMZ and Skream and shit, too much midrange, I need PUUUURE SUB

naming genres is all semantic anyway, it's all just music.
