Ok, after reading in the paper that Mercury Records will no longer be making CD singles or vinyl singles I was wondering just how people were getting their music these days. Has vinyl sales really fallen that much? Or are people buying older vinyl therefore making sales of new stuff seem lower, but vinyl still selling the same overall in general. Or are more and more people going to digital?

Anyways I'm just interested to see what people on here are doing. Obviously it wont mirror the rest of music spectrum entirely, but just keen to know.

Honestly, if you can purchase a tune for $2/3 bucks which never degrades over time, can be backed up in multiple places & entire collection fits in your pocket, then why pay $9-12 for a big plate that will degrade & weighs a trillion tons to move a stack of them… buying LPs as your main source of DJ material in 2011… can’t see the point…

(I’m not talking about Collectors, Purists, & Sonic Fidelity, that’s still a reason to buy vinyl).

the point is that it's about a million times nicer to mix with vinyl.

It's a much better feeling knowing you've got your music in physical form that you won't ever loose. (As long as your house doesn't burn down or gets robbed ofcourse.)

I picked other, since I either get digital stuff sent to me or just have my local guy order for me at cost for vinyl

It's nice to mix? I feel more of a connection to the music if I've bought a record too. Digital shit just sits on a hard drive and never gets listened to really. I can go walk over and dig through all my records for things to listen to and I cherish it for years.

I don't mix (well very occasionally, but only in my own bedroom) and I get most my tracks off a Youtube ripper. I download a lot of mixes from various forums, and I still buy a lot of CDs, in fact for some reason over the past year or so I've bought more than I ever have I think.

I don't know how anyone can use a youtube ripper.

Firstly not paying is pretty cuntish

second is the sound quality on a youtube rip is painfully shit

vinyl from online retailers, discogs, actual shops and tunes sent through aim from other producers

I marked every one except 'illegal downloads'.

I can't believe people actually do youtube rips. C'mon, if you're gonna be a prick and download music illegally, at least go to torrents where you can get 320's... so when you play them for people, they don't sound like absolute shite.

Holy christ, youtube rips?? God knows what quality they are/transcodes etc.

Generally buy digital, then burn to CDs, would love to own vinyl, but I don't have the space to store it all - also, I've never mixed with vinyl, don't think I'm anywhere near good enough to..

No of course mixing vinyl feels better. That’s obvious. Look, I know us musicians are passionate about vinyl, and you’re talking to somebody who’s paid his dues, many many (10+) years of buying vinyl. I was talking about financially and physically, the reasons I now choose to buy digital--not a diss to the medium.

As far as whether you listen to what you buy: speak for yourself. I listen to my iPod all day everyday, in the car, in bed, cleaning, walking around, at work, non-stop. Read: does NOT just sit on the Hard Drive un-listened to. And how would having my nice record collection at home help me on a long car trip? Can’t take it with me.

its not that hard mate, i reckon anyone with an ear can have a fair go at it.

also, vinyl is good for the reason wolf and others stated, mainly the fact that its physical, you can pick it up turn it over, stick the sleeves up on your walls, lick it etc

also i download alot illegally, mainly because i want to listen to it once in a while but cba wit youtube, if i would buy something, i actually buy it, get me.

I live in the middle of nowhere in the US, so I use a lot of online distro's, namely forced exposure and chemical records.
If I lived someplace like Chicago or NYC, I'd probably do a lot more buying at record stores which specialize in house, downtempo,
dubstep, etc.

Clicked all the vinyl ones, legal free downloads and other, because I buy a lot of CDs as well (of course, majority aren't dubstep, but still, some are).

I begrudge paying for downloads, I've always been more than happy to pay [extra] for vinyl and CD and the physical side is a huge part of why.

I've never paid for a download, so its torrents and soulseek for anything I get that is digital, but I buy alot of vinyl so it evens out

Well that's the thing, I don't play music for other people. Personal use only, I don't even put them on my iPhone... literally just rip them because it's easier than having to wait for Youtube to load up the track every time I want to play them. They're not leaving my computer, so I don't really see the problem.

From my CD purchases I still put a lot of money back into music, my conscience is clear!
