Hi all,
Macabre Unit is a name that has been synonymous in bass music circles since 2001, when Raffa Demon and 9er’s Bedford based collective of DJ’s, MC’s and Producers first began unleashing futuristic, bass laden productions from their studios.
Unit productions quickly became some of the most identifiable and defining anthems of the early Grime/Dubstep era, with everyone from Slimzee to Hatcha unleashing the Macabre sound from Sidewinder to FWD>> in 2002. The huge “Slow Jam”/”It’s All About” dropped on Square Records, an imprint of Static Media stable, with releases following on Slimzos (“Everyday Life”), B-Line Recordings (“Sense”, “Crusher”), Zodiac series (“Take Time”), and Plastician’s Terrorrhythm label (“Lift Off”), as Macabre plates got reload after reload in the raves.
Productions continued to be released as the forward thinking beats sat harmoniously with the flourishing Dubstep sound, spreading the Macabre Unit name further with support from a number of big DJ’s. The haunting Horror Show EP caused a stir in 2006, the Ghost EP followed on Boka, before anthem “Sunshine” finally saw the light of day on GetDarker’s huge first “This Is Dubstep” CD. Further GetDarker output came in the shape of the brutal “Cardiac Attack” and collaboration with Fused Forces, “Steam Roller”. Other collaborations include Don G, Sweetie Irie, Afterdark and more recently, Milton Keynes based collective Intensive Care Unit.
The Education LP encapsulates how the sound grew from it’s inception, and showcases classics alongside never before heard riddims and previously unreleased dubplate only VIP’s. It drops on in house label Unit Jamz.
To celebrate the release of the Education LP, Macabre Unit selector T_! has completed a 65 minute “History of Macabre Unit Mix”, showcasing beats and vocals from the crew from the last 10 years.
