Used to think this but I'm not drinking atm and hardly a fanny magnet.

It has to be for DJ'ing that buzz when you select a tune that everybody in that room knows is the right thing and then you mix it in like a boss and everyone goes crazy, I've never had a rush that good. Ever.

For producing it's when you put that song out there and it gets a huge response (even better when you play it out and the response is good!)

I'm not sure if this is meant to be a serious or satirrical post, so I'm going to go with the former.

For me its the satisfaction knowing that something I create others can relate to, in whatever method they find most meaningful. DJing not so much, that's just bloody fun. Producing though, there's more involved, you can give more of yourself.

DJing is just so fun. You meet new people, etc.

Sometimes it's kinda nice being the only sober one at a party...

Meh, by the end of the party I'm wasted anyway.

I find that being able to mix tunes really helps my production!
After most music writing session's i'll aways bounce down what i've done and have a mix and blend with other tunes.
Just to see if it works well for djs...

i've only recently got Traktor before that i never really mixed my own tunes before with other tunes but only when i start using traktor really notice my sounds were really poor to other tunes and that i need to learn more how to use eq's and learn more on proper mixed down before that i only heard my track's on my monitors and could not really tell the difference..

so hoping my future tunes to have better sound quality with phatter sounds so i think djing helps alot.

Aside from that, I think the two really help exposure when combined. Personally, I got serious about DJing well before I got serious about producing. I had a fair following locally before I started cranking tunes out, which was awesome, because I knew the right music people around here, and people were excited to hear my tracks immediately when they started coming out. Think it's much easier to gain at least a fair following as a DJ, because as long as you're a little good at what you do, the product is going to sound okay, since it's other people's already polished work. I know of some kick ass producers around here who've never gotten any DJ recognition, and as such, aren't really getting a whole lot of recognition in general.
Then a crowd going nuts when you drop your latest track of course is super nice.
Anyway, I generally think that anyone who's comfortable with their producing should pick up at least a little bit of mixing. The two fields really compliment each other.

Nothing. being a producer gets you shoved under the rug as a DJ, or overly respected for no good reason, pick... and being a DJ does nothing but cripple you with 4 bar formulas.

Producing (for most) alone is not enough to pay the bills, production is merely a promotional tool, whilst Djing is where most of the money is made. So you produce... your songs are known, learn to dj, play your songs, and your set to go full time ...!

For 95% of my shows I play live. This in turn lets see how my tracks work from a different perspective. I have reaped the benefits of this in my production standards.

DJ's can be far too hit and miss at the moment in Dubstep. Too many people trying to be on a flyer way before they should be out of the bedroom. Standard varies way too much. Promoters need to sort that out... Promoters who put themselves on at their nights is another one. Make sure you can do the job before stepping behind the decks.

Funny you say that.. I was DJing around 3 months before I played out first and used that experience (played the shit first slot at a night I helped run where it was just bar staff/couple of our mates) to grow as a DJ faster than if I was just in the bedroom and think it was quite healthy to learn how to play on big systems, cause its gotta be said - you have to play different when playing out to an extent!


I think DJing helps you produce just like producing helps you DJ..It depends how you look at it, I find DJing has helped me be more interesting with my structures as I base my tunes these days on blending opposed to 'dropping' and build them to be mixable into a certain couple of tunes I play at that point in time (probably why my music sounds quite different all the time)..

Being -kinda- known as a producer and a mod on here also seems to get me good browny points when I meet people when I play out also - people generally think I am a nice bloke and stuff so I dunno.. I think they go hand in hand cause DJing is fun and producing is what comes natural to me!

I don't know. If you're producing music that is to be dj'ed out to drunk/high semiliterate affluent people, old school djing (ie vinyl, ie actually knowing the song you are playing) is an excellent way to really learn song structure. You can also learn the way bass and sounds in general as well as dynamics translate on big systems.

I think dj'ing can be very beneficial to young producers who are interested in making club music.

I started DJing about 5 months ago, bit more now probs and I am looking to produce in the future.

I feel my knowledge of song structure, phrasing and all that shit has grown massively since I started DJing and I've learnt to respect and listen to my music more carefully. This can only help when I do eventually look to go into producing during the summer but honestly, it's just a hobby and not something I take overly seriously. Not played out yet, I don't think I am up to the standard frankly...but I know my tune selection is killer, so you know!! Hopefully by the end of the year I'll let people hear.

I've been djing vinyl for 1 week and one thing I've learnt is that i need to structure my intros a lot better when producing, that is, with the dj in mind.

DJing got me involved in college radio and event production & promotion, which lead to making a lot of contacts in the drum'n'bass scene. That led to the opportunity to DJ at a lot of local events (DC and Baltimore), plus from 1999 to about 2003, I was able to DJ out of town a fair bit, flown to a few cities for gigs and a great chance to see some new cities and meet a ton of cool people. Booking & throwing events that featured regional, national and some international talent added to the networking, and for a little while I had quite a few exclusives in my bag, helped me stand out from the other local DJs.

Production has not been my strongest suit, but I have seen friends really develop and go very far, and I still plug away at it when I have time. Some of my friends continue to do very well, and some old acquaintances have either turned their experiences in to skills for other genres, or dropped out completely. My own skill set is still developing, and I have collaborated in a couple things that got released years ago, and after a five year break I started producing again, trying things outside of what I thought I knew, and learning a lot.

Both DJing and production are fun for me, but I am resigned to just keeping both as hobbies (work & grad school & relationship have most of my focus and energy nowadays), although you can share with others, either playing sets or putting out tunes occasionally (either released or just giving them away). I don't want to say it's an age thing either, as I have known people who either first came up in their thirties, and/or releasing music (drum'n'bass and dubstep) in their forties, and in varying circumstances.

for some reason i didnt get that most dubstep intros are 16 or 32 bars so they mix in better, before i started djing.
