What's with people and sub-genres?

Why are people so obsessed with having to put EVERY single artist they hear into a category, a genre? It's starting to get pathetic. What, just so they can say to their friends, "Oh I don't listen to dubstep I listen to Semi-robot-snareonthethird-cackle-dragon step." It's different, 'so and so' does it on that one track.
There are wars now, on what Dubstep is and what Dubstep isn't. Okay, so you don't think Doctor P is true dubstep, alright, simple solution, just call him an electronic artist.
True, there is a difference between guys like Burial and guys like Skream that should be noted, but with the amount of sub-genres and all the shit that people have to make up so they can profile every one of their favorite artists is just...sad. And annoying.

So if you listened to a band you wouldnt put them into a certain genre/sub-genre?? Would you just call them all 'band music' or 'rock'?

People do go a bit overboard with the sub genres of sub genres, but i think genres are needed in a lot cases.
Like if you told someone you were a huge dubstep fan, so they went looking and found Borgore, Datsik etc and if there was no differentiation between brosetp and dubstep, they'd assume that was dubstep and that, lets be honest, your a bit of a twat.
Theres a huge difference between electro and electro-house but without the genre differentiation a fan of Justice might look for something else in that vein and say they like electro, so someone could give them a few Deadmau5 tracks to listen to.

I personally have no idea what to call any of the new post-dubstep stuff thats coming out at the moment...and i love the fact that i can't! Maybe its just me and my musical taste broadening but i have never bought so much stuff off boomkat ever before. I am lovin it.

I really dnt know what to call have my shit. I just put them in (Bass, Dubstep, Post Dubstep, UK Funky, & UK House). I like to stay organized so I need some way to know where to dig thru in my files. 12" r a lot easier to categorize than mp3s

I can't see that there's anything wrong with a little bit of categorisation.... nothing too specific... 'Dark', 'Chilled', 'Jump-Up' - that sort of thing. There's no point trying to pigeon hole everything too much though. A lot of stuff will cross-over styles anyway

i dont really get what your saying on that last bit, but justice nor deadmau5 are electro, or is that what you mean, they say they like electro and then dont get what they are looking for?

This is true, very very true. But when people create a new genre because of one song an artist made, or even one sound. It's irritating. But the world would explode if everything would be classified as something broad like Electro, it's just...fanboys.

While I do find sub genres kind of silly, I will never forget when my friend tried to tell me that I wasn't playing dubstep when I had Mala playing in my car.. I was so....

I think what hes trying to say is Justice = Electro, Deadmau5 especially his early stuff is electro house maybe bordering on prog house. Its all about personal perception though.
Personally electro id class as Justice, Boyz Noise, Fake Blood, Kavinsky, DIM that kinda thing and electro house - wolfgang gartner, deadmau5, malente and early steve angello kinda stuff!
But thats just my view, others may be different, doesnt make it right or wrong!
With dubstep especially for djs they have to categorise somehow with so many different styles being introduced these days things!

Stop caring what other people do and just listen to the music?
If you think people are missing the point by caring about subgenres, aren't you doing the same by caring about them too?
Some subgenres are pointless, others aren't. It's best to just not give a shit. People come up with dozens of new subgenres each day, none of them stick. And the ones that do are generally accepted.

I was using Justice and Deadmua5 as examples.
Justice are electro, and Deadmau5 would be considered electro-house (i guess, i dont listen to much of his stuff), but if there were no sub genres both would be called electro even though theres a huge difference in sound between them.
So a fan of Justice may look for something similiar in that vein so may ask for some electro, and because there was no sub genre they may get recommeded Deadmau5, and that is not what they are looking for at all.
Wheras with the sub genres we know whats electro, whats electro house ect.
You dont recommend Cannibal Corpse to a U2 fan just coz there both rock, genres are needed.

Thing with dubstep is I thought it was never about being a specific genre, I don't think you should start coming up with all these sub genres. Why Can't it all be dubstep and stay a broad and limitless term. I mean otherwise you're almost forcing things to be formulaic to make them fit in with dubstep or future garage or whatever.

People chatting balls on the internet isn't what causes formulaic tunes. What causes formulaic (whether they're tearout or 'deep') tunes is boring uncreative producers with limited quality control who write them, boring uncreative DJs with limited quality control who play them, the promoters who book them and the undemanding audience who'll listen to them, and everyone on that list needs to man up and take some responsibility rather continuing to do the same old shit while complaining that the music's boring because of 'people on the internet'. People were making identikit wobble tunes for ages before anyone was using the word 'brostep', people are making boring noodly two-step tunes who don't talk about 'future garage'.
