There’s one obvious panning issue – people’s left and right ears tend to have different response curves. If you’re right handed, your left ear is probably more sensitive to high frequencies (and vice versa).
That’s why in a lot of dance tracks with hissy high hats on the off-beats, they’re almost always panned to the right if they’re panned at all, to increase separation. If they were panned left, there’d be more headaches through listening to headphones.
I also generally find that if a slapback effect is right first then left, it sounds more balanced than left then right.

I always thought it was just myself… that perhaps I was going slightly deaf in the right ear, as for my unconscious urge pan high end percussion Right… I almost always do this… then try it on the left, recoil in horror, decide my hearing must be bad and that its probably better left center, but because it needs to be panned: move it slightly right…
But apparently there’s a genetic reason for this preference????

I am right handed, and can hear more with my right ear.
What does that mean? is my brain the wrong way round? or may hands? or my ears on backwards?

No you’re actually describing the same thing. You’re just proving his point. I use my right ear to DJ with as well… I bet you do too… We seem to prefer this side is what he’s saying...

I pan high end stuff right as well, always just sounded more natural to me, midish-clicks and crunches always got panned left, never really thought about why till now

I always try to balance everything so if I pan something high right I'll make a note of it and the next high thing I put in the track will go left :\

I'm right handed, but I've always done DJ monitoring with my left ear.

wow that's pretty interesting. I am glad I read this as I also experience the same thing when producing w/headphones on. I just thought I was losing hearing in one of my ears!!

and to think I just thought I'd lost some of the high frequencies in my right ear from Jakes dropping a Dr. P track at Void.
This is pretty cool though, I did used to pan hats right but I usually am keeping them centred these days.

i could always tell what song had a somewhat shifted stereo image of spectrum... if that makes any sense...
im left handed so if this is true, ive been used to the right handed way of doing things anyways... i just follow my ears...
i also think the thing is a lot of mixing engineers dont use headphones as much as we do to do the bold job...
it all comes back to knowing urself...
