I am replying even though this thread will be moved in the audio or production section of the forum.

To me, it's definitely Dubstep.

Interesting hi-hat pattern, but the hi-hats seem to lack a bit of brightness. I would have given them a bit of a sharper attack maybe ? The snare ( wouldn't that be the cold sweat snare ? ) sounds a bit dry, and the kick seems to lack a bit of " oopmh " and character. The guitar and piano parts really adds a lot to the whole. Excellent pad ! Smooth atmosphere and the drum loop rolls nicely. This piece makes me want to get out of the 4/4 path for a while and explore new avenues.

Maybe you could do a DJ friendly version where the intro and outro are in 4/4.

The intro and outro are 4/4 but the bulk of the tune is in 7.

I welcome any departure from 4/4.

so word--- moosed the 7/8 sounds fresh as hell, pleases my ear totally! and I also think moldy's suggestion of making it dj-friendly might be good for this sorta music...

personally I'd love to hear even more experimental tracks, say that have intro & outro in 4/4, but go various time signatures in the tune itself...

I dunno I've always been nuts for that sorta thing, from Dave Brubeck's stuff on Time Out to Steve Vai to Tool to Dream Theater and from there onto Venetian Snares fooooo shoo!

i dont actually understand what 7/8 time actually means but the tune is really good, so mellow and deep

it means the bar is cut short by 1/2 abeat. n usually sounds fuckin wierd to my ears (in dance music anyway). so moose ya done a good job of making such a bonky sig work...
would definately do an intro/outro in 4/4 if ya want anyone to play tho!

As the whole idea of dubstep is to make music with a certain feel but without boundaries, this is really a welcome direction. Any production issues aside (snare eq, whatever else....), I don't think you even need to have a DJ friendly version of this. That's another great thing about dubstep, all mixing doesn't have to be super tight, there is room for experimentation. I would hope that dubstep crowds don't get lulled into the formulaic wobble/drop/whatever else vibe and are ready to be challenged, even if the wobble does and will have and deserve its place. I think that's what most of dubsteppers got into this for in the first place, the challenge and freshness of the sounds. I know I left (more or less) DNB for this reason. I would clear the freakin' floor with anything different! whatever....

To sum up: 7/8 = good.

another way of looking at 7/8 time is to break the measure down inside your brain and think of it as one 2 beat measure and then a one and a half beat measure . hahaha that probably makes even less sense.


but yeah i've been listening to alot of TOOL again , the drummer from tool has always been one of my favorites. he routinely doe songs in freakish time signatures, 9/8 , 7/8 , 6/8 , for some it's really hard, for others , its like being bi-lingual . i digress



but for real , i've had this song on repeat and im not sick of it , good work ! i realy like the little creak sound that comes in at 2:50 , it's like a rolll leading into the snare , kinda sounds like a creaky door , fuckin sick

Really feelin this Altair track - it's got a mental swing to it that twists round my brain. The verbed out piano really does melt away like someone said earlier. Very nice work - definitely my kinda sounds.


I love doing stuff in 7/8 or 9/8 cause it flips out the 4/4 heads. Two of the rhythms I improvise on in my liveset are in those signitures although I've not had a gig since last september.

The last track i did that got a release is in 6/8 and is called 6/8 peace as a sly nod to leftfield. It can be found on this FSOR compilation of various styles and artists based on a forum set up by the postunder guys out in Israel.
