inverting phase

hey guys, read somewhere I can do a 'phase invert' to a song which will give me an acapella.
Anyone know how it's done?

invert phase on the instrumental, lay it on top of the vocal version, and hopefully you get it. Tho if they are separately mastered you won't probably get shit.

in audacity another (even more crappy) way to do this is split the stereo track of the full song with the vocals into two mono tracks and invert one of them.

That doesnt make a whole lot of sense, the vocals will be canceled too?

I think where hes going with that one is most vocal tracks are dead centered. this method tho and any other method without having a perfectly matched instrumental are shit.
