Z-Plane filters

So, another question from me!
While it's not strictly about wanting to make a sound and having no clue at all, but more of a technical question on sound design, I thought I might as well post it here instead of the new help me make this sound thread.
I've been making progress in my journey, trying to recreate the so-called 'dungeon' sound.
However, I need to make my sound more 'alive'.
Wub mentioned earlier that using z-plane filters is a great advantage, so I wanted to give it a try, but I can't seem to find any free z-plane VST's.
Ofc, I won't give up, so I am considering buying one, if I am able to find one.
Are there any other z-plane filter VST's/techniques that can recreate the effect of a z-plane out there?
I would love to test one before spending a lot of money in a soft synth.
On the other hand, there are hardware samplers.
I do not have ANY experience with hardware considering music production whatsoever, so call me a noob if you want, but I just want to know these things :)
The thing is, are those E-MU X2/X3 hardware samplers any good for recreating this sound?
I do not want to spend a lot of money on something which isn't going to help me producing the things I want.
Thanks in advance for any serious responses, I feel bad for making a special topic about this, but there's just so few information on these things!

I'd be curious to know what Z-plane filters people use, paid or otherwise.

z plane filters are only found in emu samplers and its a very complex filter. their mostly eq's morphing between each other. i know theirs a couple of emulations around for reaktor and such but i think their isnt any software or plugins that truely emulate the sound

Are Z-Plane filters patented by E-MU?
Ofc, these algorithms are hard, but I can't believe that there's only one commercial company who can think of such techniques.

On a side note, a fake z-plane which can emulate the effect of a z-plane filter for, lets say, 50% is fine for me.
I just need to know what a real z-plane filter is capable of once ran on a couple of detuned squares :6:
The vids on youtube showing a z-plane filter on just regular sine waves are very impressive, therefore I might invest in one of these :)

i dont know about patented but i do know emu is the go to for zplane, and if you listen to a lot of neurofunk youll hear resses being mangled by zplanes. billain for example :D

Bit pricey though. +morphfilter does the whole morphing between filters thing but I'm not sure as to how it compares with emu z planes.

I did a brief list/overview/technique on z-plane filters the other week;

I read that, and I thought it was extremely informative! Thanks Wub!
Your post actually made me consider experimenting with these things, so therefore I made this topic :)

"This product is currently out of stock"

It seems like they want to renew this version as it is Vista/XP only, and a lot of people own Win 7 nowadays.

Oh, I found some samples of a Z-Plane on some nice reese's for people who don't know what Z-Planes are capable of: (which was probably me)
http://darkbeats.com/sampleswap/Dillusi ... erdistort/

Seriously, these filters are some next level! Great sounds!

Billain uses his own Z-Plane filter he made in FL, so if you research it you could possibly try and make something similar!

heh yea i chat will dillusion all the time
he's pretty much the master of all things emu
as far as the vst side, besides some reaktor ensembles peep fsr simple scape and some of the stuff they did
http://www.freestylerecordings.net/site ... ftware.asp
pretty much the closest i've found to emulating a real z plane

Or explain it in this topic so it might be worth adding to the production bible, because I think there are more people interested in your techniques. (myself included)

Yeah I might as well just write a guide at some point, pretty bogged down with college work but I'll get something sorted soon...

What exactly is it everyone wants to know?

Well, I'm busy with college and exams as well, so I can't really explain in very great detail, but your songs do have reese basses which sound 'alive'.
For example, the song Shut Down. I posted a timed comment on your soundcloud so you know which sound I mean, but seriously that's exactly what I mean with a sound being 'alive'!
I am not even sure if you use a reese to produce these sounds, but it sounds like it to me.
Basically, I'm interested in making a standard reese bass sound like it sounds at that certain point.
Everyone knows how to make a reese bass, but very few actually know how to finish it off properly to achieve great sounds :)

Okay I'll see what I can sort out in the next week or two.

the filters on my ESI32 are the forerunners to the Z plane technology.... same sampler MuZiq uses, anyway, they are digital but fucking phat as phuck! i picked mine up for £40 so cheaper to get the real thing than it is to buy a crappy mulation of them...

also the Z planes in all their glory are in available in the EMULATOR X sound card and emulator x vst plugin... so check if you can get that...

i have that card so im not sure if the plugin needs that dedicated hardware or not....might be worth at least a look though!

but for Z's buy the samplers! they are not expensive nowadays anyway! even the high end "E series" EMUs (like the E6400 turbo! sick bit of hardware truely sick!)
