instead of right clicking and adding things, try middle clicking inside the patcher. this brings you to the plugin picker, where you can clearly see 3xosc and many other plugins :)

i know about both of those things. but when i load 3xosc it either 1) ignores it or 2) gives an error message

When you try and drag 3xOsc in, it doesn't let you.
That's the only flaw in patcher IMO
But I love using it for bundling and doubling effects

Sooo, this is pretty much like ableton racks? Can you program macros to control various parameters?

is there a way to have a sampler as a sound generator? I'd like to set up my Reece Split Freqs, but I couldn't see a way to use a sampler as the sound source?

you can't use 3xosc or sampler or other "hybrid" plugins, explained in that thread above^. to get to plugin picker middle click (the scroll wheel) in an empty area in patcher
