I know this forum may not be the best place to ask this question, does anyone know of any forums big on speaker specs ect?

I'll still ask it here anyways:

I was thinking about buying a pair of KRK Rokits, but my dad says that I would be crazy to spend $300 when I could possibly buy two drivers and tweeters and end up with two similar quality speakers for a lower price. I have no objection to this, but I don't want to end up with two pieces of crap hissing out white noise, but instead speakers with the clear "colorful" sounds that a medium priced monitor speaker would provide.

The problem/question comes with the fact that I am completely clueless about this kind of stuff, and don't really know where to look or what to look for. Does anybody know of any drivers and tweeters that are comparable to those of the KRK Rokits or other medium priced monitor speaker?

My advice would be if you already "don't really know" anything about what your trying to make then you should probably go with professionally built monitors. But I do see where your coming from.

I should have clarified that part more. I don't know what to look for in the parts themselves. My dad has put together plenty of speakers and definately knows what he is doing, I just want to make sure the drivers and tweeters we get don't have wierd accentuations and cuts.

this...unless your prepared to research designs, measure, and calculate loads of shit in order to get these things flat i would just buy a decent set of monitors. DIY speakers are fine for other listening purposes but i wouldn't for mixing...

also you if you port your speakers you have to account for that cuz its going to change the tuning of the speaker and the response etc...

It's not just the drivers you'll need. Studio monitor casing and stuff is designed from the ground up to proviude a flat response. This means the air needs to shift around the right way, with the right force, your scoops need to be the perfect size etc etc.

You have to remember that studio monitors are supposed to provide an accurate response. Whice means the driver is matched to the cabinet, and the driver+cabinet is then matched to the amplifier. So all 3 components work together as one. If you get a driver, put it into a cabinet it wasn't designed for and add an amp that isn't designed for either, its anybodys guess as to how it will sound.

While i understand the fun of building your own speakers, i wouldn't recommend it for this purpose.
