Any help with this would be grate.

f**k with some white noise? that is all the info I can give you since I have never tried synthesizing a clap. i would say reaktor is amazing but i am sure you can synthesize a clap in almost any synth if you know what you are doing.

Really not a bad idea. ^
If you ever have questions about this, look at a waveform of what you're trying to emulate, like a 909 clap, for example. That can act as a roadmap for what you can do. W/ 909 claps, there are three smaller hits, and then a bigger hit. This is likely filtered noise with a few different envelopes on the noise osc (or a few different noise osc's with their own envelopes).
Another technique is to synth up a singular clap sound, put that in a sampler, map it across the keyboard, and mash your keys... ie, hit a few keys very loosely in time, at different pitches (eagle claw technique), record the output through processing like perhaps an eq or filter and a compressor and limiter. Maybe with a touch of reverb in the mix, depending on what you want to do.

Does anyone have any good links to resources (something big to read preferably) on synthesising drums sounds in general. I'm crap at it.

Would like to be able to design my own sounds? Seems more personal.
Seems like you could carve out more of a sound for yourself if you're shit hot at sound design in general.

I find sound design the most fun part of production.
