Hey all, I'm pretty much new to this forum and have only been producing for about 6 months. What i want to know is how do people get their own original percussion sounds ? I'm just using reason presets and i feel like its cheating in a way. I want to be able to find my own sounds so i dont sound the same as everyone else.

If you're after refills for Reason, then the following videos should help;

Finding free refills

Make your own refills

If you're after individual samples i.e. not refills, then you can either check the sample repository here - http://www.dubstepforum.com/viewtopic.p ... 78&start=0

Or else sample your own. You'll need an audio editing program to make your own samples, such as Audacity, and then you can import songs/tracks/sound effects you may already have or have downloaded into it, and then cut them up. Alternatively, if you change the input source on Audacity to stereo mix;

You can record anything that is being played through your machine at the time, such as internet radio, YouTube, iPlayer etc.

IMHO if using your own percussion hits is what's stopping you sounding like everybody else then you should probably work on making your rhythms, melodies, structure, sound design etc a bit more interesting. Unless you're into super-minimal techno or something. Nuff people have made interesting and original music with standard 909 or MPC hits or whatever.

Slightly repitching your hits, filtering them, EQing them, volume enveloping then etc can be a good way of getting them into the vibe you want, though.

Building your drums from the ground up with synths and your own recordings is a great way to totally take control over your drum sounds. This can be extremely labor intensive. You can easily spend 3 hours working a single kick up to where you want it... haha, slow progress making songs like this, but you know, if you like doing it, or really like the results...

Rusko recorded some of his sounds with his own voice. :W:

I like the Kryptic Minds approach of using a mobile phone record random sounds. The Foley approach of recording stuff like hitting forks on glasses and heavily processing it for cymbals. Running water into a sink and increasing the flow then processing it to yield a cool sweep that no one else has.

buy an old turnie.
go crate digging.

srsly. i just converted to pretty much 100% sampling, and it is SO much fun. percussion samples out the ass, just look for old world music records.

the great thing is, you can find some really obscure sounds that no one else has used before.
