ez all, im new to production. ive got ableton and to save me hours of time trowling through all of the sounds, i wanted to see if you lot could help me. Im wanting to make the original sound (dark and deep) and wanted to know in particular what drum kits in ableton are best to use?

I don't think any pre-made kits will be any good. I don't know for sure though. If you want the sound you have in your head, it's probably best making the kit yourself.

I build my own for every track. Pre set kits aren't that great.

buy a sample pack you like and go from there. producerpack.com will have something you need- build from there!

I have a 1TB external hard drive just dedicated to samples I've bought or downloaded online. Sample packs come with one-shot drum samples as well as full drum, bass, percussion or synth loops. Some great sample pack include Vengeance, Goldbaby, Xfer, and Prime Loop's collection. These come with separate drum samples, such as individual snares, hats, and kicks; which you can then drag onto an impulse machine or drum rack and then you've successfully built a drum kit.

ableton actually has some decent stock kits, like the 808 and 909 kits (which are good for getting a beat down, and then adding your own samples to the rack).....didn't kryptic minds say in their masterclass that they had used some of the stock kits/hits ?

I agree with Wayoftheworld, the samples in Abe are pretty decent. I make all my kits from samples or out of synthesis i.e. white noise etc.
Layering makes them more original in a sense, give that a go! :)

You can get some decent percussion results with Ableton's Percussion 1 kit. It's an Impulse kit, not a Drum Rack, but the sounds are very good right out of the box. As for kick's/snares, I like to layer live sounding drums on top of synthesized ones. Gives you an original feel whilst maintaining punch.

yea ive found the 808 and especially 909 classic kits quite good out the box but the others seem a bit shit tbh. i need to get downloading some samples.

Can any1 suggest 1 particular favourite site they get their samples from so i can have a look (free if possible but if they are rwally good i dont mind paying)
(i know there are endless threads devoted to this question but if i can get a straight answer here and now it would be easier haha, cheers guys :D :D :D

this.

drag an empty drum rack into the session view

fill the empty drum slots with samples

save the drum kit

presto

now you have a drum kit
