Westerns

Aren't they great? I've only come to appreciate them only recently, but I must say that John Wayne films don't appeal to me very much. What are people's favourites? Which has the best soundtrack?

For me it's the 'spaghetti' westerns that hit the spot. Sergio Leone is a master but I've only seen his more known / acclaimed films: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly Fistful of Dollars and Once Upon a Time in the West

So my entry for best film that is maybe a little more obscure, and with a great sing-along theme tune, Vamos a matar, compañeros:

The lyrics (if you understand Spanish, even better ;))

Levantando al aire los sombreros
Vamos a matar, vamos a matar, compañeros
Pintaremos de rojo sol y cielo
Vamos a matar, vamos a matar, compañeros
Hay que ganar muriendo, pistoleros
Vamos a matar, vamos a matar, compañeros
Hay que morir venciendo, guerrilleros
Vamos a matar, vamos a matar, compañeros
Luchando con el hambre, sin dinero
Vamos a matar, vamos a matar, compañeros
Estudiantes, rebeldes, bandoleros
Vamos a matar, vamos a matar, compañeros
Hermanos somos, reyes y obreros
Vamos a matar, vamos a matar, compañeros.

It's the one everyone talks about, but I always found Unforgiven to be pretty killer. The sparsity of the soundtrack is great, and the music guy knew when to just use ambient noise/sound to make a point.

The Assassination of Jesse James by The Coward Robert Ford

im not going to sing its praises because i watched it without having read any prior reviews or really knowing anything about it, and i believe that was important

but watch it, and i promise you won't be disappointed

:cornlol: that reminds me of this:

I was waiting for someone to mention Kurasawa!

@Noam I've heard that mentioned before and all I know is it's supposed to be pretty special for some reason or another. I'll 'go in blind' like you recommend. Incidentally, something you might find of interest, this guy writes well on the links between westerns and radical politics: http://www.austinfisher.me.uk/publicati ... i-western/ (some articles in the right sidebar)

Recommended once already, but going to do it again;

My all time favourite film in the world ever bar none, and a direct influence on Red Dead Redemption. Seriously. Half the RDR storylines/characters were ripped off from this film.

LOL at that video!

Yeah, it was bound to be me that mentioned Kurasawa. I think i'm the SNH #1 Kurasawa fanboy.
I'll keep it to the western Westerns - Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid is a classic, i'm also fond of the Young Guns films mainly for the memories/lulz, Dances with Wolves, Legends of the Fall (not sure that counts).

Shanghai Noon is fiyah!

The best, of course, is wiki, wiki wah wah Wild Wild West! :6:

True Grit was decent film I thought, a little drawn out perhaps.

Definitely check Django for the real deal.

What a scene that! I think that's Sergio Corbucci (same guy who directed Compañeros)

Dances With Wolves I really liked too... but I still prefer my westerns with a good dash of exploitation. I loved the final shootout scene in The Good , the Bad and the Ugly because while I was sure The Good would pull through (after all, Clint made it through the rest of the Dollars trilogy) I was also pretty invested in The Ugly not dying. In fact from that point until the end of the film is all golden.

Django is definitely one on my 'to watch' list. I agree about True Grit being good but overlong.

And yes, Blazing Saddles, obviously :h:

You mean that oooold ass 1903 one? Yeah it was pretty cool but I could never rank above all other Westerns no matter how innovative etc. it was when it came out...
