I really struggle with this - house kick drum

I know this isn't about dubstep but I struggle so much trying to make or find a good sample of a house kick. All the samples I find have things like hats or shakers with delay on them layered on top pretty much making them useless, no matter how much amp envelope and filtering i try and do. When I try and make one i cant get a strong enough punch that doesn't sound like an old broke 909 kick. Anyone have tips for getting a deep kick that REALLY punches, with pretty much only a click in the high end, no extra BS.

Usually I use a light saturator of some sort for extra punch, sonic maximizer, sometimes compression, and EQ on my kick drum to get it to sound how I want. Also after watching a lot of tracks on the spectrometer sometimes I add things like extra pitch envelope since the pros seems to do that. I also cut off the lowest low freqs and an additional cut at 250 and sometimes a little one 100-150 to get rid of some mudiness. The high end is eq'd according to what is necessary for the individual sample.

Reference of an awesome kick and track in general:

thanks in advance i know someone can help me

I havn't been able to listen to that track you put up, but I'd say you'd struggle to get the house kick from just a breaks sample, which it sounds like you are trying to do. In house the deep bass comes from the kick too, and in a lot of tracks you can hear that there is the thunk part of the kick, and then a subby part underneath. You could try layering the two, and maybe adding some processing like a bit of saturation and compression to try and unify them.

Alternatively you could just find a ready made house kick, of which there are thousands on the internet ;-)

yeah vengeance samples rock most of the time and have brutal punch but like I said in the original post a lot have a weird mid range or high noise that totally ruins the sample. No amount of eq or other effects can cover it up.

Initally they sound awesome but once you put it in a 4/4 beat and crank the volume the extra sounds become apparent really fast. I just want a hard "click" ya know.

any one have tips on the compression or effects used in that song?

seems like you need to improve on ur mixing skills.

in a cleaver mix, the worst sounds could be used but if they complement themselves, they'll sound good.

if u want something very clean and lifeless, daws usually come with tons of these as stock sounds. i use the stock logic ones sometimes, when im lookin for a lame ass plain kick.

"a lot have a weird mid range or high noise that totally ruins the sample"
That's why you got EQ, lol :P

If you like that kick, just sample it.

Vengeance house essentials sample pack is key. A free alternative is deadmau5's "xfer" sample pack. Some nice clean kicks in there. And since it's free, I'd recommend checking it out.

make your own kick, i've done it on massive before and its fairly straightforward.

sine wave, quick attack and choose your decay and release. then assign a pitch envelope to it, so it pitches up and down rapidly at the beginning.

Sample kicks from metal bands? Also look up some disco tunes that start with a bare four to the floor.

im pretty sure you can get a good house kick from the vengence pack, thats probably who its aimed at, not dubstep, it was probably made with house, techno and club producer to use. it even has house and club kicks! i dont get how it can have noise that you cant get rid of, if its high noise a really abrupt high cut/low pass should easily sort it out, especially seen as if your layering them only one of them should have some high frequencies anyway. but like lot of house records start with just kicks or kick and hat or summat anyway, so just cut one out.

op, i didnt pay attention to the track u gave as an eg

i was able to squeeze a little information out of w.gartner.

u could achieve a similar sound with the kicks that come with vengeance minimal. just layer them cleaverly...

gartner spends a heckload of time resampling and mixing... he really does. he's a nerd.
