Youtube: Can high hits hurt your image?

Hey guys

So I was overly curious at a video a friend posted of my tunes on youtube (A Dubstep remix of 'Mad World', by Gary Jules), as I know it had collected alot of hits. I checked it today and was shocked to find it the second most viewed remix of the tune on youtube (second only to a bafflingly popular Happy Hardcore Remix)

Now, it doesent take a genius to tell me that this dub is crap. It was very near the first Dubstep tune I made, and I also made it in mid 2008. (uploaded by my good friend Okibi around 2/3 months after). and there are just a million and one things I could have done better. What I'm curious about is this:

as still a very unknown producer, do you think having a madly popular 'mediocre at best' track that people can stick a name to is even worth having out there? Do you think i've screwed myself by having the wrong tune get popular? Has anyone noticed trends like these in music? am I annoying the shit out of anyone who reads this by sounding like a keener?

maybe.

Well I think the general consensus is that you should hold back your music until you are 100% confident in it. And not saturate the internet with it early on otherwise you will just misrepresent yourself.
I don't think having a popular video can hurt you if you're happy with the tune though.
That said I want to keep my shit off youtube completely. Unless until there is a reason for people to actually want to search for it.

Word. Yeah truth be told youtube videos of tracks end up on some bizarre, dodgy websites in addition to youtube.. kinda shady. cheers for the reply

Emtee Eden are doing OK out of it, and their massively popular tune was a bag of wank, so don't worry about it.
