Calling all Technics experts!

Hi,
I'm going to look at a set of Technics SL-1200 Mk2s this afternoon. They're being sold in flight cases with no carts and the guy wants 450 quid for them which I initially thought was a little high. However he claims to have had them since 1991, and that aparently they are essentially a much better build quality than techs built later on. This is due to all of the internal parts being built by the company themselves, as later on when the sales started to increase quite rapidly, Technics apparently began to import parts from all across Europe.
I'm not doubting the guy and he's sounds really safe after talking to him on the phone, just wondered if people thought there was any tangible difference to this type of 1200 as opposed to later models?
Best,

Seriously though is there any substance to what he's told me?

balls mate, he might be right about the parts but it makes little to no difference, and in fact certain parts on newer models of technics are far superior, the pitch control for one
off him 375 and go up from there

Just got back from looking at these, he's pretty determined about the price so I'm thinking I might pass on them. They're nice decks and all but I don't think I can justify paying that price for them. He seems to think that collector types will be very happy to, but I'm not sure.

if all you want is a pair of technics then just try n get sumat cheaper, if you want collectors items maybe splash the extra cash if you can find out actually why it might be worth it??

i bought a pair of PERFECT, as in shop condition as new, for 400 a few months back.
450 is worth it for the flight cases aswell, those things aint cheap.
the real question is what are they worth to you.

id agree that the flight cases are worth the extra. plus you can show off about how youve got 'vintage' technics.
£300 is probably the best price you could hope for and that'll be with no flight cases and not necessarily in good condition. seems like good business to go for these...

when i was looking around anything 350 and below had missing or cracked lids, and missing 45 adaptors, aswell as general condition was lower.
i wasnt so fussed about missing or broken lids untill i realised they were 60 quid a pop new!

got mine with lids, mats, needles and in perfect condition, for £200 off my brother's mate who never used them
sorry to rub it in
£450 these days is probably ok if you get flight cases, but do you really need flightcases?
edit: you can get a pair of 1210's off ebay for like 350 with a mixer thrown in.

i guess £450 ain't ridiculously overpriced considering what they cost new but i managed to get a pair with ortofon carts and a mixer for £250, so i would keep looking, you will definitely find a better deal
