I have a free VST called "basic 64", it can make any type of chiptune sounds.

just look for chiptune, there's communities around the web...
ull soon realize it's hard to program so it could sound as good as ur favourite megaman tune.

+1 for TweakBench. Also check out ChipSounds by Plogue. It emulates all the classic retro sound chips, POKEY, SID, TIA, DMG, etc.

+1 for basic 64 and the tweakbench plugs.
In addition to square waves, bitcrushing(automate the downsampling/rate for cool lofi sweeps like a rocket taking off), fast pitch modulation(alternating between 2,3,4 octaves and different intervals for different sounds. ie: 2 notes an octave apart, 2 notes a half step apart create happy/dark sounds)
