I use Cubase 5 and love it, i'm not a fan of Ableton from what i have used of it
however, my friends been producing for a while a purely uses Ableton and loves it
it's one of those questions that you can't really have answered for you
Best bet is too youtube them both and see the differences and extra functions and decide what looks best for you, your work and your budget

Never been a fan of Cubase. It makes me feel all claustrophobic. Ableton all the way.

Why don't you download the demos of each program, and check em out for yourself ?.

Well ive done a lot of research today and downloaded the free 30 day trial of ableton. It seems like a kickass program and im already becoming pretty comfortable with it. I feel that cubase is geared more for audio recording and mastering than a electronic music program. I also heard that it really uses up your cpu to and ableton is quite light on my pc.

I wouldn't say either of those are true really...although Cubase is definitely better for audio recording if you compare them. Both are great programs but the workflow is a little different. Also, Cubase's packaged effects are great but the synths are kinda lame, and Ableton's packaged synths are great but a lot of the effects are pretty lame. You can download free synths / effects that do the job that either of them are lacking.

i don't' think cubase is heavier on your cpu, i have cubase 5 and i can use more synths and effects than i can on ableton. i'd say ableton is the heavier of the two to be honest.
i use ableton and cubase for different things. while you can do the same on both of them, they're geared up slightly different which makes some tasks easier. ableton has more features for live performance, while i prefer cubase for producing a full track on. i use headphones a lot, and cubase has the control room feature, so i can put redline monitor on and use a seperate channel for headphone monitoring, so the plugin doesn't affect the main output.
ableton has an awesome feature called an effects rack. you can make a massive effects chain, stick the whole lot into an effects rack, then assign macros to each knob in the effects chain. cubase doesn't even come close to this feature, its awesome. you can then put effects racks into effects racks etc, the possibilities are endless. so you could assign one midi control to several plugins if you wanted to.
i prefer the sequencer in cubase for making a whole song, this is what cubase was built for and it does it well. so in short i'd say cubase has the edge for sequencing, whereas ableton has the edge on effects and live performance. i love them both!

Why do you feel the need to ask this question? Without question it's Ableton. To be honest, I'd nearly go as far as picking garageband over cubase...

Unless it's Cubase 6, Ableton all the way.

sorry mate, but thats a bit of a stupid reply. you've knocked one of the leading daw's without giving any reasons whatsoever. care to share your reasoning?

Really? it seams to me that ableton is more of an advanced DAW. I currently use fl and am trying the ableton 30 day trial and it seems much more technical. I am getting used to it and it has a ton of great features.

Thanks for the input, I think im gonna download cubase to and possibly even buy it along with ableton, 6 looks amazing and I love the new features like modulating the individual midi notes (even though one synth is capable to do it right now). And im looking forward to compare the workflow of both programs for the videos ive seen cubase does look better at producing but damn is ableton awesome haha. maybe I need to rewire them.
