So what do most of you guys use to produce raunchy basslines? Massive seems to be a popular pick. Is it completely fruitless to attempt to use built-ins from you DAW? Trying to consider what soft synth to get and not sure how to weigh pros/cons of the different ones available. If its any help, I'm in love with Feed Me's basslines. Mmm

I use massive along with the rest of the dubstep-lemmings.

Tal-NoiseMaker Plugin is free and can crank out some decent basslines (depone uses it around these parts) i have used it in conjunction with massive in some of my more recent tunes.

I have tried to use operator (built in soft synth w/ ableton) and have had mediocre success, but i always just go back to massive and start there when i am building a bass sound/bassline.

If i had to guess, Feed Me probably uses massive for his basslines.... especially the more "skrillex"esque growls. Rumour is that Feed Me actually helped mold Skrillex's bass sounds once Sunny joined the mau5trap family lol.

Well if you see it like this, the people on Rottun gotta be working together in some way and not only while making tunes, I think they share tips and techniques regularly. The same goes with the Circus One crew, they don't make similar sounds from coincidence. So ofcourse the people on Mau5trap share ideas and tips and techniques with eacother, just like the other label families do.

And to op, as soon as you start learning synth, it will the best one for you

I use massive, but thats just because my basslines are just usually pure sine wavs or just deep sub with a bit of mid range sound. Im pretty sure skrillex uses FM8 for the base sound though, then a shitfuckload of resampling.

my go-to has been maelstrom-thor-subtractor combi... one of each, sometimes two of something... or some other combination

haven't gotten much love from Predator. Massive is a great synth, soooo much of its use though is kinda wank

Skrillex uses FM8 (I'm 99% sure of this). Also, I doubt Feed Me uses massive. He might, but I read somewhere that he uses Z3ta+ for a lot of his sounds.


OT: As of right now, I'm only using massive. But I plan on getting FM8 (along with everything else in Komplete) eventually. If you know what you're doing though, really any synth can be used to make amazing basslines.

Albino3 for most basslines, or i distort and stretch samples of stuff like snares.

I am currently loving FM8 along side Ohmicide...
For some nice big bass I prefer Rob Papen's SubBoomBass

Usually Massive and FM8. I've started to work with Albino and loading samples into Absynth.

I remember reading somewhere that "Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites" was originally called "FM8" because FM8 was the main synth Skrillex used to make those basslines.
Not entirely positive though.

Personally I've been going straight to 3xOsc (built-in Fl synth). I just like being able to open it up and start from scratch, or import a waveform from my "resampled" sample library.
I also enjoy resampling and experimenting more than building a Massive patch for some reason. Not a huge fan of Massive's metallic sound either (although it can be worked around).

I have FM8 and love it, but really only use it for pads and things like that. It's awesome for creating plucky/percussion type sounds

Unless your buying no komplete. I say buy fm8 instead of massive. Much better method of synthesis and can get some great shit of it. Igot sick of using massive for midrange baselines. It's great for keys and pads though.

To get back at op's question :

a lot of people underestimate daw-bundled synths... logic has some incredible default synths .. so does fl..

some people use them. its really a matter of finding a synth/softsynth ull love to tweak.

I've had whole tunes where I've used nothing but TAL VSTs for both the instruments and effects - loving their Reverb at the moment after someone mentioned it in another thread
