The extremely embarrasing basic question thread

aka whats an insert & a send?

How would it work in relation to FL studio?

Is it simply the flow of when and where effects are applied?

you know where you assign an instrument to a channel and add up to 10 FX on it? thats an insert. the four inserts on the right of the mixer are sends, you can't route an instrument directly to a send, but you can route an insert to a send.

An insert is an insert FX on one of your mixer tracks (reverb, delay, compressors etc). A send is when you route the audio from one mixer track to the master and also to another mixer track. Example: say you want to use a light reverb on a send to give different elements a "being in the same room" feel. Instead of going and adding a reverb on every track that you want to have verb and copying the same settings to each one. You can just route each mixer track to your "send" track which has the reverb (reverb being fully wet, meaning your only going to hear the effect of the reverb not the audio thats being input) on it already. Sends can also be used as busses (except when you using a bus, all the different mixer tracks are only being routed to the bus THEN to the master from the bus, dont confuse sends and busses). A bus is when you send all different kinds of tracks to one single track to make it more organized, or to do an effect the all of the audio as a whole. How I use busses: i like to put all my different hi hats, snares, kicks etc. on their own mixer track for complete control over each sound. After i tweak each one to my liking, ill route all of my drums sounds into another mixer track and name it "Drums Bus" then that bus track will be sent to the master.

Send: Audio is being sent to a track alongside being sent to the master track.

Bus: Picture all of your sounds (all your drum sound mixer tracks) boarding a school bus, and getting off at the next bus stop (your bus track). Going from point A (original mixer tracks) to point B (Bus track). And from the bus stop they got off at (your bus track), they go to the master channel from there.

hope i explained clearly. :W:

Yeah that's lovely, cheers.

Seems I had the right idea, already use Drum buses etc., nice to have it all clear and concise.

Good thread idea :)

Anyways, how do I use any audio effects in Ableton? For example, the mixer in FL Studio.
Also, how to link these effects to plugins to a certain plugin

comeon now thats exactly why this thread was made! to eliminate this nonsense..

well anyways,
any specific effects yourt curious about?
in essence you just drag an effect to any channel, to have it effect that channel.
and can you be more specific with plugin and effects? thats kind of one in the same to me! like a compression or reverb plugin.. nowutimsayin?

the fl studio mixer would be more specific as you would have to run fl studio as a slave app within ableton and then route all channels to the mixer, not sure why you would be interested in doing this though! and no positively sure if you can run fl in ableton. soooooooooo ill look into that lol

No no, I was just using the mixer in Fl Studio as an example, in case you didn't understand what I ment.

There is nothing nonsense about reading the manual. It will answer his questions better and faster than anyone else will and it even has pictures.

I need some terminology cleared up for me. In the Chase and Status masterclass they talk about layering "Amens" to get those airy drum and bass style hi-hats. Are they referring to The Winston's Amen break or is "Amen" just a broad term for breaks made of slices from old breakbeats that they have created in the pattern of the Amen break? I'm confused.

Search amen break on YouTube . When you hear it you will instantly recognize it. It's a break beat loop that all different genres of music have rinsed the shit out of.

Its the break down from Amen Brother by the Winstons.

A lot of popular breaks have their own names like Funky Drummer, Impeach (the president), Apache.

Heres a site full of popular breaks and their names (and downloads of them too..)

http://www.junglebreaks.co.uk/

You can also find what the breaks and samples people use come from, from sites like; http://www.the-breaks.com/ ; http://www.whosampled.com/ and a few others what have slipped my mind.

Hope this helped/made you wanna dig further about spotting samples and breaks!

Thanks guys, but I don't think I phrased my question properly. I know what the Amen, Funky Drummer, etc breaks are, I just don't understand what people are saying when they say something like "One day I will just spend the entire day trying to make Amens" or "We are layering Amens". There is only one Amen break, so what on earth are they talking about? Are they reconstructing the pattern of the Winston's Amen break from other breaks? Thanks and sorry for the confusion!

What they are doing is getting the original Amen break and processing it for use in their track. They might be cutting it up so that all the various hits are available as "one shots", or maybe pitching it up a bit to fit in the tempo (especially for Dnb and Jungle). They might also be adding a compressor to the snare and kick to make them more punchy. They could also eq out unwanted frequencies to make the whole thing sound "cleaner".

Regarding the Amen break, I would like to know how the ride cymbals are extracted so well by some producers. You know in some of those jungle tracks where the rides are just like liquid and they make the drums push and pull so nicely. How do you get them from the break, which has a lot going on? I was thinking they might just use some other cymbals, but I can't get any other cymbals working that well. Example:

p.s. Goddamn I love that track :U: Beautifully realised.

You can also use the amen as a groove base, but use your own sounds. That could be one of many ways to use only the rides, besides actually chopping them out. For example, you can load the amen (or anything) into ReCycle, and slice it up nicely, then export it to MIDI. Import the MIDI pattern into your DAW, and use it over your own sounds. Ideal for layering as it helps keep the original groove. They didn't have ReCycle back then, but MIDI was used a lot more (especially to interact with hardware).

Thanks Worm, that clears up a lot. Also, I'm going to have to try that recycle technique. Nice idea.
