Hi,

I have Event Tr8s and recently got a Tannoy TS12, 12" woofer 500 watts power, it's wicked and the box is quite small. I only need it on half volume. Any louder and the walls start rattling and the neighbour below me starts screaming.


Saying that the Mackie 12" 500W woofer they have at uni seems to go even deeper in the 20-25 hz range, but that is a much bigger studio with some dodgy standing waves.

I highly recommend the tannoy ts 12 - you can hi pass the tr8s which means they can go a lot louder without the cones rattling, coupled with the sub you can go way way louder than before.

This is the sub on its side - (the woofer faces downwards)

nice... im looking at buying monitors + woofa for my home studio, on a pretty tight budget but i dont want to have to start saving straight after i buy them cuz i have to upgrade... anyone be able to give me the heads up on decent monitors/sub that wont cost me a mint, but produce loud, quality sound?

If you can find it in the UK, I just got the Samson Resolv120a for a decent price $199 US from Sweetwater. A 10inch, 120 watt wicked sub. The volume goes to 10, and I don't have it above 1 to get killer bass frequency.

can't really stretch to the tannoy, any objection to tapco? i'd jus like to get one to get the idea of the lower end. i might be up for investing in a badboy in the future, but its not an option right now.

Not sure about the sub thing. I've considered it a couple of times, but they one's I've looked at don't seem to offer a 'significant' bass response increase to my RP-8's in order to justify the expense. I mix subs on my stereo, which has a great low end.

Bare in mind - a good sub (with hi pass output option) will take a load of bass weight off your main speakers so the whole system can go louder, and therefore feel way more powerful thsn you're used to.

Remember that loud bass doesn't equal correct bass when mixing though. Bass frequencies are the hardest to tame in your room, so before you aim for under 50Hz, consider how much room treatment you'll need to get accurate monitoring (fiber, not foam, and lots of it).

Here's a good place to start.

I'd suggest instead of getting a sub, get some fiberglass and build some basstraps for your room. Your 8" woofers should be able to reach pretty low if the room doesn't fight you all the way.

Just a thought (ninja-style).

anybody can recommend a smaller 8" budeget sub?

the guy suggesting bass traps is bang on

if your gonna increase bass make fucking sure you treat your room as much as you ca before its silly, bedroom studios and subs wernt designed as mixing studios for a reason

im talking huge standing wave issues here

word. just mastered down 2 tracks today in a studio that does only dance music-- and has no sub. they do, however ,have a really-well treated room and the bass was PHENOMENAL. having well-powered jbl monitors didn't hurt, either-- pure sex.

build one you wont regret it

bought an 18" or so sub off ebay with a large power amp for £70. dont use it for setting the bass level cos my room aint treated or anything, but its useful for seeing how your tunes sound LOUD and how a system style sub speaker would handle it

I got one of these Fostex PM Subs, is wicked.
