Scuba's drums...

Are some of my favorite (alongside FlyLo and Instra:mental). Also, I suck at finding good drums sounds. Was searching Scuba interviews for hints on how he finds his drum sounds. Anyone got any clues? Oh, also came across this great quote of his:

"So a DJ should be able to make people dance to something that if they heard in isolation they wouldn’t necessarily think of it as a club tune."

Yes Paul Rose, yes.

EDIT: And/or just what do you guys think make his drum samples so damn good? Quality sample selection? Great compressing/eq? Creative layering? (Personally don't think it's the latter)

ive been trying to emulate his drums for tiime

i reckon its all about sample selection, (theres a lot o found sounds in there) and simple rhythms- building the tune around the subby kickdrums rather than the other way round, as well as having great breaks every 8/16 bars.

Yea I've been collecting field recordings for a bit now, but it's pretty damn hard to come by a "natural" sound that works as a good kick, I must say. I'm most interested in where he looks for his drum drums (kick, snare, general hats). Whether he sifts through sample packs, rips from vinyl, records players or whatever. BTW, def a fan of the snare in your sigged track :)

EDIT: And nice synth sound too!

They're always wet. I don't know how he does it, but low pass & reverb don't add water to my snares like it'd seem it would. I really want that damp sound... :|

Been using found sounds lately, cardboard boxes can make nice kicks.

Yea I feel like a cardboard box being put OVER a mic would provide for some good subby kick. Just got the go-head to record some live drums next week! :D

i think a big role in his drumsounds are natural sounding room reverbs. obvs sample selection plays a big role but yeah... a proper room delay will help lots to make it sound 'real' or even 'live'
