So I recently found an ol' Roland JV1010 that my pops bought awhile ago. I'm having trouble sending midi to it via my Akai MPK49. I plug the JV into a power adapter, do MIDI out from MPK49 to MIDI in of JV1010, made sure the channels are all lined up, and still no MIDI signal (there's a MIDI signal that lights up on the JV1010)! The only thing I can think of is that the fact that the MPK49 is getting it's power from my computer must be messing this thing up somehow. If it's plugged in via computer, would MIDI not send out?

does the jv have an audio out or have sppeakers? does the jv not have a keyboard of its own?

It has audio out, but I'm not even getting a midi signal so there def won't be any audio coming out.

how do you know your not getting a midi signal, are you anticipating hearing the jv have sound come out of the speakers?

Can you clarify that? The MIDI LED on the Roland is or isn't lighting up?

I would triple check to make sure the channels are set up correctly and there's not some rogue setting like MIDI RX set to off/0. There's also a switch on the back to select MIDI, try that?
I've never used the JV-1010, but it's multitimbral, so you would also need to assign each sound its own MIDI channel to be triggered in order to get sound, 1-16 using that Part/Patch/Receive knob. Not sure how it works though, going to have to check out the manual. Roland has all the manuals archived on their site btw.

I don't think power is an issue, unless you don't have enough power. I would also try sending MIDI directly out from your computer to the Roland and see if that works.

I recall someone telling me that the MPK series doesn't send data through the MIDI out port when powered by USB unless you specifically set it up to do so in your software. MIDI data is transferred to your computer via the USB port I believe.

When the MPK49 is connected to computer via USB, only the computer's midi is sent to the midi out on the MPK. Knowing this, I did MPK midi out -> Roland midi in -> Roland midi out -> Saffire (soundcard) midi in. You also have to set your DAW's midi preferences accordingly.
