Like that. Grungy, over driven crushed drums, low end electro drone running through things, tons of delay on the ambient effects and hits. Noice.

Well, that's my recreation project for the day sorted

And the awe & might that is Super Mantis...

Love the filtered didgeredoo sample at the start of this. Heavily modulated bass growl coming, something with a formant filter on perhaps to give it the sound. The drum beat is lush on this, really nice and sparse, boom tsk snare boom tsksnare, really nice and simple.

Again with the heavily delayed effects on the ambient sounds. Kick sounds really overdriven to the point of being distorted (give TriDirt a go for this kind of effect)

Bass is really grimy on it, just love the way it evolves throughout the track. The long attack that is on some of the notes isn't present on all of them, so maybe automate the ADSR envelope on the synth to get that moving feel to it.

It's the incidental sounds that really make this tune though. There is a brooding feel running through it, combination of the dark synths/pads that are floating in the background. Fuck it, I'd probably go for a combination of simple pad progresssion on a lower than usual note, maybe some EQ'd bass that is more for colour than feel to be layered with that, and maybe a couple of really stretched out samples (snares, maybe) for some grit. Run all that through a 'Background' bus, whack a compressor on it (lightly) to gel it all together and then maybe have some very light dipping on the volume fader whenever the kick hits to it breathes in and out.

This stuff is kickass... You guys need to check out Salem. Not really the same type of music, but a lot of the same heavily distorted stuff going on.

Mick Harris has been a ledge for years, heavy heavy heavy.

Analogue (and samplers) > real desk.

win.

I always am dumbfounded when Dubstep-heads say they have never heard of Scorn... not only does he have the heaviest chest-bass sound of em all, but he has been doing that sound since the mid-90s.

Oh yeah, and before that he was the original drummer of Napalm Death.

He also has done ambient soundscapey drone stuff too. In short, Mick Harris pwns everyone.

and on & on....

Yeah - he is someone I'd like to get to do a Q&A...

Usually when distorting bass that much, it either thins out or simply crumbles... his always has so much weight.

Enough to crush a fucking truck

I know man.... I fucking ashamed of myself for not getting on this earlier..... It shits all over most of the Dungeon Sound stuff thats about at the moment.

Glad I had a part in inspiring this thread then. :P

To me this is hard and dark. No need for LFO'd high pitched screaming noises and buzzsaw synths.
All about the atmosphere and sparse deep hitting sounds.

Yeah, should point out that Wormcode was the catalyst for my introduction to Scorn with this post from SNH:

i remember lending this record and aphex's i care because you do to a friend back in 1996 (or roundabouts)
he was convinced that all electronic music was chipmunk vocals and pitched up drums
would have loved to see his face when he dropped the needle on the scorn lp lol

The Bug/Kevin Martin is someone else who has been making some of the best dubstep around. He used to release some pretty noisy stuff too under Techno Animal and Curse of the Golden Vampire. The latter almost a grindcore/industrial hybrid. Then of course King Midas Sound which I think is one of the most exciting projects in the scene today. Another influential person I think would be great for a Q&A sometime.

Been listening to this on repeat all morning:

Scorn - Gravel Bed

Again, listening to it and trying to work out what's going on so I can have a stab at recreating some of the effects later when I fire up FL.

Loving the layered drone synth sounds at the start with the long attacks on them, plus the white noise samples and background effects that all sit over each other. Reckon could run those through a bus with compressor (as mentioned above) to gel.

Love the heavily reverb'd/delay'd hats that are the start of the beat. The kick really fascinates me, because the first 2 beats of each bar have a very heavy reverb on them and that overdriven crushed sound, but the next 2 beats have the effect removed so it sounds more organic. Big fuck off splashy metallic snare, fuck yeah loving that too.

Again, the background drones and ambience are what drives this tune. The filtered conga sound that seems to be working it's way into the tune around 2min is very Shackleon-esque for me, and I've tried doing that sort of thing before so reckon this is another chance to have a stab

The high pitched synth that seems to float across the top of the mix at 2m20s is lush as well, really gives an ethereal quality to things, almost discordant. Not sure how I'd recreate the discordant feel, like nails on a chalkboard but deffo do-able I reckon.

The 3m30s break is lovely, really strips everything back to the just the ambience and that sparse conga smattering. Not sure whether getting some sampled explosion sound effects and stretching them out wouldn't be a good idea to try to give some of that build up play in each bar.

So yeah; lots of drone/noise/pads layered, long attacks on the synths so the gggggrow into the mix, automation on the kicks to raise/lower the levels of reverb/crush that is going on, and really simple percussion with heavy reverb/delay.

^^^ Some good ideas man. I cant wait to have a stab at a tune like this later.
