im a toal n00b to producing dubstep. im in the process of making a collection of tunes for an album most of which are jungle/dnb and electro/breaks and would like to do a couple of dubstep tracks to break it up a bit and for the outro. what are the bpm rules and time signatures i should stick to? anything else that might might be of use would be much appreciated - cheers.

a couple of non dub tracks on the album here.. jungle breaks/electro weirdness tech step grime tech step

keep it between 130-140 bpm on the whole.....

try wobbly bass and lots of sub.

for the distinctive half-step sound put a snare on the third beat of the bar only.

Sample dub sounds. use lots of reverb and delay.

Don't worry too much about the ins and outs tho just stick to the bpm and experiment with putting your sound at a different tempo.

Failing everything else get a loefah/toasty/vex'd etc... beat. put it into a track on your sequencer and copy the structure by making a beat to go along with it then delete their song, change your drums round a bit and you have the canvas to work on!

yeh the only rules i would follow would be tempo wise around 130-140

rules are what confine a genre, and lack of rules in dubstep has led to its amazing progression from bleepy melodic stuff by Skream to skanked out dirty Loefah productions.
