I wouldn't say it's too soon, but to tell the 'joke' to him is waaaaay overstepping the line.

Not offensive in the least imo, especially compared to when Greg Giraldo made the "David Hasselhoff's liver is so dead black and shrivelled, when someone puts their ear to his stomach, you can hear "whatchu talkin' 'bout Willis?" No one cared. Although, Greg was actually really funny:
