im sure this has been a very common topic on here but id figure id post this since im very new to the forums.


is fl studio a good software to use to make some great GREAT DUBSTEP if im wanting to get signed. ive made other genres before and people loved it in the clubs. but im wondering if the sound can be better if i switch to other types of software.

i see deadmau5 using ableton
and alot of others using logic
and others using other programs.

i know this has nothing to do with dubstep but i know laidback luke uses fl studio but yeah


idk. main question is to make dubstep whats the best software to use?.

there is no best software. go with what you enjoy working with.. fl studio is fine! also, there's a production forum for this kind of questions

I'm currently using FL studio because it's really easy to use but I'm trying to familiarize myself with Ableton because it has some way better features. I'd go with Ableton

FL studio for prodcution,

Ableton for live performance.

or whichever better suits your workflow. Been using FK for 6 years, cant beat some of the great features FL 10 has to offer. ! Plus Image-line makes amazing synths, and you cant beat FREE LIFETIME UPDATES with FL. Every other DAW they make you pay to upgrade.

Fl studio is pretty easy once you know the terms and such. Honestly, you can make GREAT DUBSTEP in any DAW. Reaper is free/cheaper though, and you'll probably end up using alot of vsts anyway. It's all up to workflow, and which features stand out to YOU.

This. Ableton is amazing for midi control. I've been using it for a year or two and I'm still finding new features to tweak my audio. Case in point, I just discovered that you can sidechain any parameter you want in Live 8 which is kind of blowing my mind.

Also the fruity loops GUI is ugly as sin.

I use nothing but FL. 200 bucks and free upgrades for life was a good price for me, and I took it. Granted, there are different features for different DAWs, but what you create isn't limited by your DAW, just you. If you can make great music in Ableton chances are you can make great music in any DAW as long as you know how it works. That's really the only difference between them. Once you understand how the program works, what you create with it is entirely on you, not the DAW.

It can really only be your choice to make. Once you do decide on one, theres pretty much no boundries on how well you can make it work for you. Hell, I just saw a video of Rusko using Sony Acid, and I thought that was dead to most producers now.

FL studio has slide function.

i agree with all of this i think. connecting every parameter to every parameter is very easy in fl though. look up the Fruity Peak Controller, and the advanced mixer features.

Ah true, I didn't see that when I was searching, I haven't used FL in like 5 years. I guess Its a bad example.

edit: I also just realized that its only available in Max for Live which is a 250 dollar add on, so Ableton loses this battle haha

I think every DAW has it's own pro's and cons, but they aren't very different when it comes to the core. FL is cheap and user friendly, I use it almost exclusively for the bulk of production. I have the luxury of having access to pro tools for mastering, and ableton is my choice for mixing. But the most important thing, IMO, is to find one you like and stick with it till you know it inside and out, don't flake and switch a lot or you won't get as proficient, not to mention you'd be spending a lot of cash.

Once you get into music making properly.. There is no 'best' DAW.

You use your DAW as a software to host professional VSTs/AU/RTAS's and your samples - its ALL down to workflow and which you prefer.

The only stock FL things I use are the reverb2, delay1 and parametric EQ2; all the rest is by by third party developers and samples.

Honestly; it can do 95% of the things any other DAW can do and what it can't you can get a plugin what can.

I can't stand any of the FL plugins, even those you mentioned, they all have this sterile tone to me, and don't get me started on the alien plastic sounds of sytrus.

Just not reason, or you can kiss 3rd party plugins goodbye.

I agree! I actually prefer Sytrus than FM8 sometimes as I can get an amazing sound just in a few seconds. I tried many DAWS and while all have their pros and cons I'm just too comfortable using FL. It just fits me, it works how I want it to work.

i personally don't like FL studio, i trialled it for a while but really couldn't get into it. Its about personal workflow as many people here have said. For me I'm totally in love with Reaper and would recommend it to anyone! But that's my personal choice and that's the point. It really is down to a matter of spending enough time a number of different DAWs to make an informed decision about which one you like best.

I was with Reason for a while, then re-wired into Cubase, then fairly recently moved to reaper re-wired and It's the best thing for my workflow.

I agree! I actually prefer Sytrus than FM8 sometimes as I can get an amazing sound just in a few seconds. I tried many DAWS and while all have their pros and cons I'm just too comfortable using FL. It just fits me, it works how I want it to work.

sytrus and fm8 are definately the best two fm synths iv used, cant really think of any other fm synths that are good... dx10 is ok for a quicky lol also to the OP, just get FL if u dont have any midi devices and ableton if you do. FL is still all good if u just have a keyboard and mouse (like when i first start producing).
