was having a conversation with a few friends of mine about religion and stuff and stuff and stuff and stuff and how the universe came to be. i had said that the big bang theory had caused the existence of the universe since the theory had just popped up in my head and it seems logical so i just had thrown that out and one of my friends said that it was irrational to think that could be true and that the universe came to be by some higher entity which is a male and he claims he doesn't have a religion. i don't either i don't really like conformity i'm not atheist either. but what he was saying, is that rational at all? i just at the time thought what he had said was ridiculous since he sounded like a hypocrite. also another friend thinks that aliens have came here and only abduct intoxicated humans because in whatever state of mind that human may be in under the influence leaves his mind "open" and blablah some other shit that i don't really think is true. same guy goin on about a higher entity was saying that the big bang theory doesn't make any sense at all and it is ignorant/stupid. i know there are other theories of how the universe came to be and i am open minded/ take other theories for consideration but was that just completely ignorant for my friend to say that? sorry if tl;dr

Well, for starters, the Big Bang Theory doesn't explain how the universe came into being, it explains what happened the instant after it started expanding up until where we are now.

For theories on what caused the Big Bang, there are numerous hypotheses and ideas of how something could have come from nothing.

Also, get some sleep.

My favourite is the one described on "The Elegant Universe", about how the different dimensional "sandwiches" bumped into each other and made the energy required for the big bang. It is not clear that there was any energy that instigated the Big Bang.

This is a much better talk on quantum fluctuations, and even breaking the speed of light due to universal acceleration.

If anything, you should watch this talk at least three times within in your lifetime, Lawrence Krauss is amazing:

from everything I have read over the years, my thoughts on the universe is that the big bang is a repetitious event that has happened infinite amounts of time.

yeah i'm an atheist so i don't feel god as having involvement in our existence, so i'm with ya.

the title of the vid i posted is a bit misleading. how the speaker brings god into the picture is not focused on god's involvement with the universe. he describes how humans, if we survive long enough, at one point before the universe contracts back into elemental particles, will achieve anything we think god can do, such as telepathy, being in more than one place at one time, etc. which is interesting.

There's no reason why not... people would've thought transferring books and songs wirelessly was as far-fetched a few centuries ago. Given the leaps we're seeing in brain science it might not be everso long before there's some sort of interface for brain-to-brain communication... just imagine the conversations (and shared trips etc) we'll have when we don't have to worry about language to share our emotions...

The standpoint that there was and is no higher power is the only rational one considering logic and evidence.
Unfortunately God cannot be disproven, as he is an unfalsifiable hypothesis. I could claim that the universe was created by a flying dog which is invisible and doesnt't interfere with matter and energy and nobody would be able to disprove me. That's why the ridiculous notion that a bearded man in the sky who is also his own son and is somehow all knowing and all powerful (which contradicts itself btw) created us and fucks us in the ass for the sins he himself created still persists.
I just can't believe how anyone can still believe in this stuff...

true but i was just thinking rationally. i don't believe in some higher entity that created everything. somethin that seems logical in opinion doesn't mean its fact i just think some deities are ridiculous in my opinion

Everything, no matter how unlikely has to occur at least once somewhere in the universe. It's "1 in a {number}" for a reason.

I am a creationist, haven't been for long (about 2 months now). This above statement was intended to ironically, 'dig' at creationism but I have a big problem with a lot of it.

Science is not Satan's ploy. I love science. Always have always will. Science does not contradict the bible. The only contradictions out there are between theoretical science (or educated guesswork) and Creationism.

Why is it so hard to believe an intelligent being created everything around us in seven days? Evolutionists believe it all started in an instant. Certain theoretical physicists believe it never started and has always been.

Masturbation isn't a problem. It really isn't, it's natural.
It is when you masturbate over images of naked people etc when there is a problem.
