matrix 1000 is dirt cheap these days.

400 pounds is really solid budget for 1 synth. microkorg, the new juno, novation bass station... all fall well under your budget.

korg X50, i picked up one in cash generator for £250

Novation KS rack. really good and you should be able to pick one up really cheap second hand.

Save up and buy a Moog Little Phatty. The bass on that thing is incredible, well worth the extra expense.
