Im just thinking about which soundcard I should get to go with the monitors I'm getting, Mackies HR624 http://www.dolphinmusic.co.uk/page/shop ... ct_id/5488

I've just built a new computer and need a pro soundcard to finish it off. I wont be using any hardware synths or anything, just software

Also, could some1 explain about the cables that come from monitors and go into the PC. i'm pretty technical but i've never setup monitors before.

if you're all digital, the only parts of your studio you'll actually ever hear are your monitors and your DA convertors. As such, get the best soundcard you can possibly afford; I'd also suggest getting a higher quality soundcard with fewer features than lower quality with more features. Do you really need 8 mediocre outputs, or can you do with two really good outputs?

Cables from monitors to computer: buy high-quality cables like canare or mogami, and get balanced ones. Try to buy the right length, I always buy cables that are too long, and then have big loops of cable everywhere lol.

..to be honest i dont know anything about the type of soundcard im gonna have to get for these monitors. this side of things is totally new to me. someone take me though the basics or point me in the right direction, please.

if your using no hardware a nice budget pro audio soundcard would be a M Audio Delta 44 or 66

and there are also some nice ones from EMU aswell

why would i spend that much on 36 channels when i don't use instruments or hardware?

If you actually want a pro card mate. Forget them 1s - Deltas do more than you need as well.

Stereo analog I/O, profess Digital I/O, Midi & WordClock (if you need em)

If you need better convertors (the Lynxs are pretty ff'n good tho)

Get One Of These.

If you really only need outputs, your not recording anything from analog at all.

Get This.

This one is just outputs, clean as fuck & usb so you can use it if you change platforms etc.

If you just built yr PC & it'll last u awhile, go for the PCI option as it has a better upgrade path should you want/need more options further down the track.

Cables. If you get the Lynx then you will need 2 xlr to xlr, Im assuming the mackies have xlr inputs - other wise you'll need xlr to trs. Spend good money here as running shit cable between a good DAC & yr amps will make the system sound shite anyways. Mogami all the way. Any decent music tech store will have a lad who will be able to whip you up a custom set of cables no worries - If theres none around yr way; Will build you some. They got a sick spec yr own cable thing on that site.

These are proper options & there are more, Apogee for example. You could just buy a m-audio audiophile & be perfectlly happy. Depends what you mean by pro.

i dont suggest u to buy those mackies.. i had them, theire lowest frequency is 50hz, not enough for dubstep or drum n bass productions for example.. and didnt like the sound anyway.. not flat enough in my opinion

Delta 44 would be good with your Mackies for what you looking to do

yeah im going for the larger model instead http://www.dv247.com/invt/7480/ thats the cheapest i seen em for. they might not be flat in some areas but as long as you know how to work around them then u'r fine.

I'm with resonance here, and if you'll be spending that amount, I would suggest checking out Adam A7, Genelec 8030A and Dynaudio BM6A (and BM5A) first. They're all way better value than the HR824.

As for 2-channel monitoring card, there's nothing wrong with the simple E-Mu 1212m, and it gives you lightpipe so you can add converters later.

fuckit. i've just purchased a LynxONE, i got it at a reasonable price.

Unempty man, dey are industry standard for a reason. and i'm out in this indusrty for more than a fair share! na jokes, but i dont wanna say, 1 year down the line, im not satisfied wiv what i purchased. theyre not cheap, fuck i know dat, but itll work out more $s if i pigeon-step everyting.

thats it man, if you've heard the mackies n like em, or, if you know people whose mixes you rate are usein em then they will work for you & your music, which at the end of the day is whats important.

So the HR824's came. they are here! i've got em all linked up to the LynxOne through its default cables,( my mogami's are on the way to me.)

The only problem is when i turn the volume low it seems to distort alot. when i turn the volume up, the music takes over the distortion but i can still hear white noise in the background.

im certain it's not the speakers. it's most probably the cables, or the software. the drivers i've installed are "Lynx LynxONE Driver Build 024m Windows 9x/ME/NT/2000/XP"

does anyone have any remedies for that? Safe
