I'm Having Trouble...

And I'm probably going to get flamed for asking a dumb question, but anyway. I've always had trouble installing VSTs that came as .exe's on my computer. They say they install, but they never show up in my folder after they install. And now I just bought one of the CM magazines (the guide to synths), and I haven't been able to get a SINGLE VST from their installers to show up in my VST folder. What am I doing wrong? :/

have you saved the file in your actual vst folder?

Yep. Every time the installer prompts me to put it in a folder, I always put it in my plugins folder. :?

Have you tried saving the file to a different folder, then directing ableton to look in that folder?

So im assuming the .exe probably is only trying to just unzip itself and put a vst with maybe a readme or something into a folder. You could use something like universal extractor to extract the contents of the .exe and then just put the .dll or vst right into your vst folder, not guaranteeing anything but it probably will work.

also on vista User Access Controls is super lame, and maybe stopping you from installing unsigned or internet exe like this. I have not worked on vista much but two tips, go into control panel and find the user accounts control panel. Then select the advanced user options and you should be able to turn UAC all the way off to never notify you, which might stop it from hanging on the install. tip 2 right click and run the executable as administrator maybe and see what happens.

Hope that makes some sense and grab Universal Extractor here for free, its open source http://universal-extractor.en.softonic.com/

This worked. I installed the .exe's to a different folder, and now the .dll's show up. Now I can just drag them to my VST folder. :D

@Blinx, I think you're basically saying the same thing, so thank you! Thanks guys!

Elaborating on this, have you tried directing the installer to your desktop, and then just manually moving the files into your vst folder?
