I love ableton but I think logic might be better for me in the Long run and the mixing in it is much better. My question is I am really used to doing my drums in ableton through drum racks and seeing piano roll? How is the piano roll ? I am used to seeing names so I can do drums. I have Geist and could do that but I like being able to control my drums more and see the names. What do you guys do, are the built in eqs in logic really that good for electronic? I have waves but I'd rather stick to the logic ones if they are ok. Anyways let me know your opinions

Best drum meth I ever had was from this sketchy guy I met after a show in a dingy bar. He hooked me up cause I had a pipe and what he referred to as a "pretty mouth".

As for Ableton vs Logic, if you're used to Ableton might as well stick with it. If there's certain things about Logic that entice you then go for it, but I wouldn't go through the bother of changing daws just because you heard it sounds better.

I imagine you can set up a sampler and set the piano roll to have note names. I know in Reaper you can set the piano roll to note names and save and load name configurations for different plugins. I have midi maps for all the different Superior Drummer Expansions. I would assume Logic has the same ability.

Stock eqs are stock eqs. Logic does have some pretty hot stock plugs, but when it comes to eq you really just need one quality one. I use Pro-Q because it sounds good and has a spectrum analyzer. It'd be better to pick out some 3rd party plugins that you like instead of switching daws over it. You say you've got waves so why not just use that? (apart from the fact that the Q series has a horrendous UI)

Edit: I've checked them out and it seems waves updated their ui to something not quite as ugly

what sunk says is true, a daw is a daw, 3rd party plugins is were its at. although i use logic and i like it, but ive never used abelton

i did the ableton to logic switch. When i did the math. it was cheaper for me to get logic then to get the 3rd party plugins i would want to get ableton to work the way i wanted it to. I do my drums in audio mostly so i can't shed any insight on the drum programming, but I'm sure it would be possible. I like being bale to see the mixer and the arrange window at the same time, u can't do that in ableton. and ableton only lets you view the plugin's in the selected channel. I found this a bitch when i was eqing two parts to sit together. i find it more intuitive to have both eq's open at the same time so i can easily edit both simultaneously when balancing sounds. I really like the workflow in logic. I trust the plugins in logic, so this has sped up my workflow. I don't sit there wondering if the reverb on my snare sounds as good as it could, i trust space designer, so i set it, forget it and move on.

I have used both and love ableton, but this guys thoughts on seeing both eqs at once really just made sense finally. I wont switch but that is a very good point to favor logic.

I'm an avid Logic user, love it to death, but the best DAW for drum programming I've ever used was FL Studio tbh. Nothing compares to its ease, like a sketch pad for getting your ideas out quickly. And, had I known better I would have kept it and do what Benga does, program in FL, mix in Logic.

I know you didn't ask this, but I said it anyway.

I did the opposite to what your considering, switched from Logic to Ableton and I must say I'm much happier with Ableton. I find it Ableton much quicker to navigate around and I get ideas down much faster. Having said that I will probably use the two now, i.e. Ableton for creating and Logic for mixing, as I do know more about Logic.

No way... I thought i knew ableton very well. I stand corrected haha

I'd say stick with Ableton. I had myself convinced that I was going to love Logic so I bought it and attempted to switch, but I just couldn't do it. It was too frustrating to me, because it seemed to take twice as many steps to do everything in Logic. It was an educational version, so I only payed like $150 for it, and I do use it occasionally. But Live and Logic are very different IMO, switching is hard.

In the end, everybody here has said some good advice, mainly, a DAW is a DAW. I use logic, and love it. But i've only used logic, heard it was the best and i only use mac so thats what i started on and have never looked back.

as for drums, I use the ESX24 sampler, its built in to logic. You just lay the drums out on the keyboard, send them to whatever busses you want, and your golden. I never understood why people drag each audio hit out to the arrange window, having one midi track is so much easyer to manage imo.

But, what you want to do, there are lots of good ways to do in logic.

About a year back, I switched from Ableton to Logic. Abletons great, but I love Logic and am glad I made the switch. I like the setup better overall. As far as drum programming goes, I use Logic's drum synth called Ultrabeat, and it works great for me.

I myself use purely audio in logic, it gives me complete control and I can mix everything seperately.

Btw, I wouldn't say logic is better for producing dubstep, if drum and bass is more your thing definitely make the move, but ableton handles synthesis so much better than logic

i work with both of them. i prefer logic for its "arrangement view" it suits me better i find it more precise and do love the stock eq . on the other hand the live view of ableton is unique vs other daws and you can put out an idea very quick. Drum programming in live is the easiest way to do you drums compared to other daws

But lets get back at the real question how to do your drums in logic in a same workflow manner that and ableton user would

1.If i use one shot samples i always use battery. i love it. just place your drums onder the pads and there are extensive tools to shape your drum sounds within battery.

2.If i have an audio drum loop just drag the sample to an audio track ,then control click and choose convert to sampler instrument. Logic then automaticaly chops the drumloops in the exs24 sampler and spreads it over you keyboard. instant bliss
