Would a vinyl-only Dubstep night...

appeal to you more than a night what doesn't care which medium you play on?
I'm asking this cause I have been thinking of starting up a vinyl only night for ages (years, almost!) and also interested in how rich vinyl culture still is, to DJs and to club go-ers.

dont like the idea, alot of small time producers making great tunes cant afford to cut to dub or live nowhere near a cutting house, so you cant hear their stuff out unless its cd...
Vinyl is great, and so are Vinyl Dj's but its not important for me, the tunes are.

probably only appeals to other DJs tbh.. i dont know about over there but around my parts no one has a fucking clue its pretty sad.
and yeah the selection and mixing is far more important regardless.

So what's the difference between now and in 03-05, and a scene that was built by 'small' producers and djs in South London, virtually around dub plates?

5-7 years, a steady decline in the record industry, mastering houses closing up shop, and digital got even easier? I mean like i said i don't live over there but you're begging the question.. what ISN'T different between now and '03-05?

Well.. producers don't have to live near cutting houses or be able to afford to cut a dub..
Thats the DJs job!
But thanks for your opinion!

It's a nice idea but would be a nightmare running it, and probably no more interesting for the punter than any other night. I imagine it'd get to the point where you run out of local vinyl DJ's after a few nights, then soon enough you'll want to book someone really really badly, but can't, because they don't play vinyl.
in Exeter there's a "Producers on Decks" night run by the Deep End. Every "DJ" must play 100% their own productions using whatever format they please. That's a more interesting concept for a night in my opinion. I am 100% dubs and vinyl when I DJ out, and I see exactly where you're coming from, but as the promoter you'd just be constantly denying good DJ's a set because you disapprove of the format they've chosen for whatever reason.

it's a nice idea but in reality most people, myself included, don't actually care what format it is, i just wanna hear good tunes.

It's good to see a growing acceptance of non-vinyl DJ'ing here. Not that I'm anti-vinyl, but yeah, it's about the tunes most of all.

What is a bigger deal to me is if people are booked because they are decent DJs, CD/Ableton type DJing can be amazing and really skilled and in tune with the crowd- but it's also an easy excuse for people with no DJ skill to set the laptop on play and auto beat match a playlist....I'm sure the majority of people won't be able to tell, but the people that are really into the music will- and that is what really matters for any decent night.
Seems like people moaned in the 90's that DJs got too big and producers didn't get so much attention, I'm a bit bothered that things have sort of gone the other way now- there aren't many DJ's that are just known/get bookings for being decent DJs. All very well getting your favorite big name producers to play, but if they can't DJ then its much better to have decent DJs play those tunes and leave the producers to do the producing. I'm guessing falling music sales and increased live event revenue means that every producer wants to get on the playing live thing, even if they are shit at DJing.
Need more Youngstas and Burials

when we first started gritsy (mid 2006) i was very adamant about only catering to vinyl djs
the first few shows were pretty strictly vinyl/dubplates but it got to a point where it just didn't make sense to exclude cds/serato/etc.
now there's only 2 or 3 people that play on vinyl here anymore. i can really only think of 2 honestly (myself and suraj k)

I'm not sure it matters these days. Although from a DJ perspective I still really enjoy seeing an all-vinyl set tear a dancefloor up. I still only use vinyl for d'n'b and dubstep, but moved on to CD's for house, techno and other business. some formats just feel 'right' for certain genres IMO.
Having said that, one of the things I love about seeing Marky play is that he uses vinyl (or is he on Serato now...?!)
