Hello all. I know that the Pioneer CDJ's are pretty much the industry standard for most gigs. I am tired of bring around my computer and deck to play shows and wanting to learn how to mix. Would you say that purchasing 2 gemini CDJ 600's and a mixer would be a good way to practice for playing a live show on pioneers cdjs? Are they pretty much the same? Are most CDJ's the same in terms of learning how to mix without beatmatching? Cheers

Beatmatching is beatmatching no matter what you use.


That being said, I'd strongly advise against getting anything other than Pioneers.

i don't have the funds to afford my own CDJ's, but i use my friends stantons & gemini mixer. first time i played live with pioneers cdjs was fine, and i knew exactly how to use them. only thing i had to watch out for was the fact that the pioneer mixer had 4 inputs instead of 2 (pulling up am ixer that has nothing playing when you've got a sick double drop coming up isnt a good look. not that anyone noticed but i was pretty gutted!)

I would advise to get a pair of Technics turn tables and learning to mix on those. This will help you to learn how to use ur ears and also how to mix under pressure.

i agree. i wish i had learnt to mix vinyl. its possibly the next thing on my list..

If you can mix on cdj's you'll be able to mix on vinyl no probs!

i can't mix on vinyl, but i can mix on cdjs. don't have a clue why, maybe i just need more practice

Other way round. Vinyl is harder to mix with than CD. No doubt. Beatmatching IS beatmatching, but beatmatching is much much easier on CDJs. So you're better off (if you can) learning the basics on vinyl, then you'll be laughing if you switch to CDJs. I've seen CD DJs using 1210s for the first time - its a sight to behold!

The way I learnt was:
A year or so on SHIT belt drive decks (very hard)
A couple of years on GOOD direct-drive Vestax decks (much easier)
A bit of 1210 usage at my first gigs (a challenge I was prepared for)
A bit of CDJ usage at my first gigs (very easy)
Bought 1210s last year (good purchase)

Hahah its the other way round for me. I find cdj's harder than 1210's

i'm not too knowledgeable on the subject, but i picked up pioneer cdj200s for verrry cheap and I couldnt be happier with em, and I feel confident using any other high end pioneers somewhere else. they kick ass, even if they are kind of aging.
