Guys this problem has been bothering me so fucken much that i've finally decided to beg and plea as a last resort because i have yet to be able to make a song yet. I have some pretty decent sounds going i cant lie about that i have decent synthesis skills in massive so i feel like my sounds are good enough to make a song with. However every single time i try and make something i dont know how to make the different sounds come together after the drop to keep it interesting! I'm making brostep or whatever it is you want to call it and i'm extremely passionate about it. I dont listen to ANY other music besides brostep and i'm using the term brostep so its clear what i'm making and the shitty "this isnt dubstep" discussion doesnt arise. Anyway i absolutely cant for the life of me get my sounds to cooperate with eachother and form a brutal filthy drop that'll last atleast 16 bars that'll keep interest. I know there isnt a "formula" for making music but can anybody please give me a guideline of how i should order different sounds to compliment eachother and make my tune actually flow? this problem has been haunting me for so long and yes i have tried to copy artists that i know but theres a problem with that. alot of the times they use little melodic fills and i cant for the life of me make anything that sounds pretty and melodic even though i have seen basic electronic music theory videos on youtube. I'm going to go ahead and post a song of an artist whos structure is more or less what i'm looking for so you guys can have a better concept of what i'm talking about. the drop is at 0:34. it sounds like its ALL over the place in terms of structure but it all fits in perfectly together. There was a thread about this before in which i participated in but no real useful information was in there so i figured i'd start one on my own until i can finally get this problem fixed. okay well i love brostep and music can be anything so i consider that music and i have a strong passion for it, are you trying to say i should give up my passion just because all i know how to make are filthy sounds? thats ridiculous

You can't find a magic formula to music & melody on an Internet forum. You're much better off getting a basic understanding of music theory (buy a book and read it) and then taking it from there.

You need to appreciate music outside of your favorite genre. Honestly, if you want to be inspired, listen to as many different forms of music as possible and appreciate the nuances and elegance of each, as I'm sure other genres have aspects which you'd enjoy. Listen to jazz, classic rock, blues, R&B, and other melody driven genres.

Excellent advice.

If your only outside influences in terms of music you're listening to are tracks from the genre you're trying to make, you'll get a nasty case of musical inbreeding.

I didnt know this kinda hard because honestly brostep has taken away all my interest in other music. its really all i like. they say you have a passion for something not when you tell yourself "i wanna have a nice expensive car", but when you can envision the brand new leather seats and feel the wind blowing in you convertible white bmw328i before you even have it. Thats exactly how i feel about producing and dj'ing my music live somewhere some day. I get goosebumps even talking about it. I dont have any other hobbies that i do besides trying to learn how to produce and making sounds. I just got a book called the complete idiots guide to music theory version 2. :/ gonna read it i guess lets see how that goes. Sucks to be stuck in a position like this i feel like i hit a wall

If you don't mind me asking, how old are you and how long you been producing for?

i'm 20 years old. i've been producing for 2 months maybe a little over that and i have no prior knowledge of music or production other than i really like it.

You're not going to be able to crank out amazing tunes after 2 months. Learning how to produce takes time and it takes practice.

just make your basslines follow whatever Key you're working in. A buddy of mine has the same problem and its mostly just because he clicks in random notes for his basslines. Plus dude you just started a few weeks ago, right? You're doing VERY well at this rate.

how long does it normally take on average to release good tracks? and thanks jr. the problem is i really dont know how to destinguish what key i'm in. ALSO thats not the only problem as i'm having trouble finding out why sounds arent working together, how many sounds is too much or too little for the bassline, and at what point in time to introduce a sound after the next. for example switching sounds every beat, quarter beat, how fast or slow to play those sounds after a particular sound. it all endss up sounding too repetitive, akward or plain wrong when i make something

Depends how much practice you get.

not saying you should abandon your passion, i'm just saying there's not much difference between this and someone who's never dribbled a ball deciding they're super passionate about playing basketball.

no what you said was maybe i should just NOT make music. if somebody has never dribbled a ball and is super passionate about playing basketball they just simply shouldn't do it because they've never done it before or arent any good?
