I'm really motivated to get good at production currently but I spend quite a lot of time away from my PC on busses, trains etc. so I am looking for any books or magazines that will allow me to continue learning when I'm bored on the bus, sure I could go on Amazon and buy random books on music theory but I'de like to know if there are any ones that would be specifically useful for electronic production.

I found Music Theory for Dummies cheap in a second-hand shop last week and have already read through it twice, the chapters on chord progression and melodies and harmonies were a little lacking in my opinion so something that focuses more on those would be amazing.

I also picked up a copy of Computer Music this week, it was ok but it seemed rather empty for the £7 it cost. The DVD full of samples and software is nice though, I guess. Is there any other magazines I can find easily in the UK that I should consider reading?

I found a few online articles through the DSF google search but if there are any that I should really have to read please post them.

May as well bro, can't do any harm haha! If your into gear and what not, Sound on Sound is THE magazine. Google them and check the website, it's the place to go for reviews!

sonudonsound, computer music and future music, normally all have decent articles but even better sample packs on the cds. consider ebay though, can get peoples old copys on there for CHEAAP

oh and props for the ravenspiral thing, never came accross this before so i'll check it out. i also have a 'music theory for electronic dance producers' pdf on my pc somewhere if anyone wants it. only problem being is i don't remember wether it was a paid one or not so not gonna just chuck a link up, pm me

Take a look at the first link in section 9.

Read the books listed in the 'Must Read' section.

If you actually read and learn what's presented in all of the books listed you'll know more than most musicians and 'producers' around the world.

First 3 books are open university computer musician course material. If you commit to studying the books and following them through you'll, well, it's the best thing you could do, trust me.

second two books are all you need to truly get on your feet with synthesis.

The Book on its own (Sound FX) is hands down the best written and most informative and comprehensive book on effects units and general DAW/studio technicality stuff I've read. It's written by a true master in the field, a university lecturer that's taught the subject his whole life and is one of the best in the country.

I'd advise subscribing to computer music to any serious computer musician, its a no-brainer.

All of these books are the best I've come across, taken me a long time to wade through the crap to find the diamonds in the rough and these be them. There may be better out there but personally I've not come across any. These are the best reading resources for learning what you want to IMO.
