An article by Kode9 from mid-2001 in which he only once refers to the stuff coming out of Tempa as dubstep. Just wondering if this is the earliest example on paper. Either way an interesting article

And most things try to tell you 2002 was when it was first thrown around as a term with the XLR8TR article solidifying it's use. Which is why I was surprised to see it used in an article this early. Like I said either way it is an interesting read.

I can't remember where I read it, but Dubstep Allstars Vol.1 is supposed to be one of the first places the word was used.

the xlr8r magazine article from 2002. sadly, xlr8r pulled this issue offline a few years ago, so there's no archive of it unless you can find the actual magazine. before that time it was called the "fwd sound", after the club night of the same name.

That's what I thought but like I said that article by kode9 that I have posted above was from mid-2001 and uses the term once in relation to the stuff coming out of Tempa at the time. It also refers to dub step as two words in the article talking about El-B. I just thought it was interesting that the XLR8TR article seems to have got the credit, apparently wrongly if it was being used a full year beforehand, by Kode9 no less.

Yeah I think this is where the term became set in stone to describe the sound rather than a few of the phrases that had been used to describe it up to this point but that was in 2004.

I know we were using that term by 2001. That XLR8R article from 2002 really helped solidify the term. I really wish I would have made a copy of the old Hyperdub website from back then. Kode9 had some awesome writings on there covering brokenbeat, electro, techno and garage among other things. It was a cool website.
