That spot in-between the "Bros" and the "Deep stuff"

Whats up guys.

Lately I've discovered that skrillex, datsik, excision etc isn't what I want to sound like, and I'm starting to dislike making that style more and more.

Ive also discovered that the "super deep" stuff isn't what I like either, I'm talking about the minimal sub bass and drums side of dub step, like mala.

Ive kind of taken a liking to that sort of.. in-between spot.

People like tunnidge, coki, benga, some caspa and some old school rusko, where there are some nice wubs and filth, but at the same time is not that headache inducing sound that the others make.

What would you call that part of dubstep? I feel like its not deep.. but its not the "bro" side of things.

Also where can I find some tutorials on these sounds? Ive been "attempting" this whole FILTH thing for almost a year now, so I know how to use my DAW (logic) and I know how to produce a basic track, what I need is some sort of tutorial that can teach me how to make that deep wub sound.

Every dam time I search for "dub step tutorial" I get shit like "HOW TO SOUND LIKE SKRILLEX" "SKRILLEX BASS TUTORIAL" "FILTHY BASS LIKE DATSIK"

I understand those guys are popular but all I want some something that will show me my way around that nice deep wub.

TL;DR: No longer a bro. Looking for tutorials on a deep but sort of filthy wub sound

I just call it dubstep so idgaf.

Skrillex is Brostep, Cheeky is Dubstep, Datsik is Brostep, James Blake is tight.

I think that you mean the kind of sound that people refer to as ''Dungeon''. Listen to DJ Youngsta on Rinse tonight (23-01 UK Time)http://rinse.fm/timetable/

In fairness... I think that is pretty much where the majority of the Dub Police label sits at. It doesn't sound like a robot cat being raped by a dinosaur and it doesn't sound like Old school sub and drums dubstep. This is pretty much where I sit in the whole dubstep genre in my personal preference for dubstep events. Perfect for tearing up dance floors but not uncomfortable on the ears.

Pretty sure Subscape done a Computer Music Masterclass a while back and in my opinion that guy is a complete don in dubstep.

It's all dubstep. Just find you're own style. Make it up as you go. Skream Benga Coki lean on the Garage/Jungle side. Doctor P/Flux P lean on the Chiptune side. Skrillex/Excision lean on the Transformers side. Nero leans on the 80's Disco Pop shit.

Moral of the story: Go lean the bieber before the bieber leans you.

Thanks for the tips guys.

Watched the icicle master class. Pretty informative.

Anyone else have any other places where I can find info on making these massively deep wubs?

Mt. Eden?
if you want to sound like mt. eden, just make sure you suck really bad and that's pretty much it. those two clowns make me embarrassed to be a kiwi.

how to make a "deep wub sound" assign lfo1 to cutoff filter on a sine sub. is that a serious question?

I do quite like Benton you know... but his new tune, seems to be a serious bite of one Benga - In the Jungle. Both are big tunes though.

If you haven't seen it already, the Dungeon sound thread is a goldmine;

I've changed the algorithm in Operator at times and it sounded a little like Caspa.

Also I have a patch I made that sounds exactly like the lead in Louder VIP.

My advice is to keep writing songs because I've done that, and my song writing abilities have improved as well as my sound design (a little).

You mean this kind of stuff? I fucking LOVE this shit. It doesn't hurt the ears, but it sits nicely in the midrange to give some good head nodding. Dungeon sound will get old pretty soon imho - there's already a lot of people moving away from it, because it all sounds the same (just another era in dubstep). I still love the stuff, and we push it hard in sydney, but for how long? Time will tell :)
