usually the cutting house will do the mastering too.

What kind of differences were you expecting?My guess would be if your song on the 10" used 90% of the room on it then it would be quieter so as to fit all the grooves on,whereas with the more room of a 12" you get to use all of it.

so just a question of loudness?

i wasn't expecting a lot - i just remember pearson sound (i think) on rbma talking about this and mentioning something about a difference in quality.

Don't know if there's a difference between 10" and 12". I'll ask First Aid when I see him on friday as he's worked for Star Delta mastering

I was always under the impression there was an optimum track length for 10" & 12". You can have longer tracks on 12" but you can have the same length track on a 10" but it involves cramming more grooves, closer together and you end up with a lower quality (or volume / range of frequencies - not sure) as the grooves can't be as deep and you're more likely to get groove collapse occurring quicker. Just my understanding of it though, I'm by no means an expert.

12" Acetate dubplate: 7-8 minutes per side.
10" Acetate dubplate: 5-6 minutes per side.

on both formats the high frequency dB range decreases ad the needle moves close to the centre of the disc.

thanks be-1ne. though that's absolutely normal on any vinyl(/acetate) format.

so it's all about the decrease of high frequency db range... doesn't really hurt my music as long as the bottom end is alright haha.

LOUDER!! I like the 10" special size, but when cutting longer songs I'll use 12".

curious if anyoneout there has cut using the more flexible "vinyl" dubs? Any reports?

i remeber skream saying on his RBMA lecture that 12" dubs sound better, personally i know nothing on the matter, im yet to cut my first dub

The outer grooves will sound better than the inner grooves. As you get closer to the centre of the vinyl or acetate, high end will begin sound less bright or in some cases distorted.

If you are getting a dubplate cut, the engineer will master the cut for vinyl/acetate as part of the cutting process.

so in most cases you wouldn't need to get mastering done elsewhere but it depends on the cutting house.

just to reiterate the above points ^

the outer grooves sound better, with a 12" you get a whole inch of better sounding grooves.

that being said i cut 10"s most of the time for money saving reasons.

In people's experience, what is the usual sort of turnaround time at Transition from sending tracks to finished dubplates? Does it make a difference if I choose to go along to the mastering/cutting session? I'm thinking about getting 2-3 10" acetates cut and I want to have them for the first week of Feb.

if you live abroad uk: 14 days in advance and you're safe
if you live in uk probably 10-12 days.

i find it interesting to go to the studio. when i come to uk i go always to the studio to get something cut and have a chat with ''my'' cutter. it's good not to keep it just internet.

but you don't have to travel around uk just to be in the studio.

Wouldn't it be dependent on the RPM you're cutting for? You can cut about 1/3 more time-wise on 33rpm than 45rpm if my maths is correct... (though 45's have better top-end, imho)
